The area
Neighbourhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

Kanda is a Michelin 3 star restaurant so one starts with high expectations and indeed these were met. The restaurant is small, with a bar that seats 9 poepol overlooking where M. Kanda and his assistant prepare the meal. There is also a private room as well. The staff was very attentive and professional. Their recommendations for various sake and wine to accompany each dish were spot on. The meal consists of a series of small plates cooked in a variety of styles as is customary for a Kaiseke restaurant. Tonight the meal featured a number of courses featuring matsutake mushrooms with alone or part of a dish. The staff is welcoming and friendly without being overbearing. I would definitely go back again. The only caveat is that restaurant is in a residential building and there is no sign outside. I had a photo of the front door so could find it without trouble, but otherwise it might be hard t find.

This is a little off the beaten bath (northwest of the Univ. of Tokyo), but it's one of the most wonderful gardens in Tokyo, particularly if you can get it during azalea season (I was too late for cherry blossoms, but it should be phenomenal then, too). Also, Kiyosumi-teien garden is lovely; it's near the "Sumo Dome" on the east side of "downtown." Probably the best garden is Shinjuku-gyoen, just east of the Shinjuku rail station. It's better known, so it's not quite a "hidden" gem--but definitely a gem!

I love that there are so many places to eat when you step out of Kanda station! Great selection of ramen shops, yakitori, tempura. There are also non-Japanese cuisine offerings like Italian available here. Make sure to install the Google Translate app to help you with the menus and the vending machines.

Not much to see here in the way of tourism, but if you're looking to get some food for the prices locals pay then head over here.
