Built in the beginning of the 17th century when Japan's unique castle architectural techniques had reached their peak, Himeji Castle was the first in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage in 1993 as well as designated as a National Treasure in 1951. It is called "Hakuro-jo" (White Heron Castle) because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a white heron taking flight.

After all parks, shrines and temples in Japan this was something new and unique. We were there during cherry blossom season, so everything around was also very beautiful. I recommend to visit this castle and to take the tour to see the views.

If you have a rail pass, and only have time to see one castle, Himeji castle is the one to go to. The grounds are sprawling and beautiful during spring and fall especially, resulting in some great photo spots. The castle itself is beautiful, and on a clear day, the few from the top is amazing. Throughout the castle and... More

Hi Marina P, Thank you very much for your evaluation. I hope you enjoyed the castle and the garden adjacent to it. I love that garden because I feel calm whenever I escape from the hustle bustle. From now on, it must be the best season with lush greenery. Well, thank you very much for choosing Himeji, and hope to... More

Huge line which moves slowly. Almost nothing to see inside the castle. Don't waste your time and money trying to get in. The castle itself is very beautiful outside. The beauty is even better in sunset hour during sakura flowering period. Gardens around the castle are also neat and large, very good for relaxing walk.

Hi igrowing, Thank you very much for your evaluation. As you mentioned, there is a long queue to get inside the main keep, and it only has a structure which shows how this fortress worked in those days. The reason why we didn't exhibit inside is because we don't tell a lie to toursts. It had been built as a... More

Himeji Castle is one of the most impressive castles in Japan. As the forecast had said it would be a very busy day, we got off the train at 8.40am, found some lockers at the station to leave our bags in (which we had been worried about!), and walked 15m to the gates of Himeji Castle. We were so glad... More

Hi NeonVenables, Thank you very much for your evaluation. You are so smart that you arrived early in the morning. Spring season, especially sakura season, is the busiest in a year, so as you said, there are always long queue to go into the Main Keeo, even at the entrance gate. Well, thank you very much for choosing Himeji, and... More

A short walk from the train station. Left our luggage in a locker which was convenient as we were stopping for the day on the way elsewhere. We went around the grounds and then inside. Wasn't expecting much from this place other than good view of castle itself. The inside was quite interesting and listened in on some of the... More

Hi Coldplay7450, Thank you for your visit and leaving review. I'm glad to hear that it's better than expected. However, we know information about the castle are short and we cannot tell international tourists our castle's attractive point. I apologize you for the inconvenience. Well, thank you very much for choosing Himeji, and hope to see you again :-) More

There's nothing else to see in Himeji to see other than The Castle. The outer garden and surroundings are more interesting than interiors. Yet somehow it's still worth paying 1000 JPY to get in.

So as castles go this one is not the most elaborate castle I've been to. However this is an enormous castle, and you can go all the way to the top 6th floor. There are not any decorated or furnished rooms, but it's state of repair is quite good. Besides the castle you can for an extra 40 Yen added... More

Hi MacJoeFQV, Thank you very much for posting your evaluation. Japanese castles are built for the purpose of fortress and armor storage. Feudal lords focused on the function to fight against enemies, so there are only bare beams, pilars, and walls inside the building. I do appreciate your warm understanding :-) Well, thank you again for choosing Himeji, and hope... More

Very beautiful castle! Lives up to its reputation! It's a short walk (about 15 minutes) from Himeji shinkansen station to the castle. Practically impossible to get lost too cause you can see it from the train already. You can take the big street or the parallel shopping street, both are a nice walk. We got really lucky sakura was still... More
