Toshodaiji is one of three temples - the other two being Horyu-ji and Yakushi-ji - that make a nice day trip from Nara. A combined train/bus tour takes you in a small loop south of Nara. Collectively the three temples are well worth the visit.

This temple is part of the Unesco World Heritage temple site in Nara, however, it is less busy and far more peaceful than some of the other sites, so worth a visit.

We visited this site having been to Todaji Temple and the Kusaga Taisha Shrine. These other sites were quite crowded and it was very pleasant to be able to take our time to enjoy these monuments without hundreds of others. This site has a number...More

The view from outside is amazing, especially on a sunny day. The inside has big buddhas and nice decorations as well. The souvenirs sold in the temples are lovely and cheaper than what you get from outside. Grab some from the temple if you want...More

Earliest Buddhist temple and shrine complex from 758 AD in a lovely forest setting. Easy to get to via Kintetsu train from Nara with one train change, about 20-30 minutes. Combine with a visit to Craft complex on other side of the tracks and visit...More

For all the temples I have visited in our two trips to Japan, Toshodaiji Temple is the most impressionable, the peacefulness and serenity was all around me. We went very late in the forenoon and was very quiet.

Great temple!!! After 3 weeks Japan and hundreds of temples.....this temple made a real impression on me , both because of the size of the temple and because of the enormous Buddha. Don't miss this temple

Their website is saying they are opening on all the day, so you will be alright. However, they close at 17:00 (you need to get a ticket by 16:30). Hope you have a great trip!
