The island is connected to Ibusuki by a tidal sand path which only emerged from March to September, a few hours each day. If the weather is not good like raining, or the tidal schedule changes, it may also not surface. We arrived Ibusuki train station at 11:00 on 4/25. At the time of writing the sand back does not surface at all due to a tsunami last year. So you can't get there by waking.

Very nice island, walking access by low tide. We went by bike through Ibusuki, what a picturesque ride despite the heat !

Chiringashima is a small island close by Ibusuki. It can only be accessed at low tide when a temporary beach path is exposed. Check the Ibusuki travel website for tide times. Chirin Island (Chiringashima) is an uninhabited island in Kinko Bay roughly 3km around and 90m high. Known as "the island of mystery" since ancient times, it is connected to the mainland by sand bar when the spring tide is at low tide. I took my mom here when she came to visit me because I did this myself and loved it. I found a lot of pretty beach glass, and pumice stones that were orange (from Sakurajima just north in the middle of the bay).
