Whatever hotel you take ask if possible for a volcano view room.. It's impressively close to the city.. Take a trip to Sakurajima island with the ferry and you will have a taste of Hawaii landscape.. The bus tour to the observatory, it's incredibly close to the crater..

I took the 2 hour tour around the entire "island". The tour is in Japanese but I could follow along with an English tour book. The lovely tour guide was always sure to point out in the book when she was mentioning something to look at. Halfway through the tour, you stop at a tourist spot for photos and samples... More

Please go to the early morning of Shiroyama observatory. Sunrise of appearance is excellent. Sakurajima ferry has been operating for 24 hours.

This active volcano on the other side of Kagoshima city is an icon of Kagoshima. It takes only 10min bus ride from the city center to the ferry station and it takes 15 min by ferry. This ferry service is 24hrs open, very frequent and costs only a few coins. So it is very easy to go and come back... More

Kyushu is well known for its numerous volcanoes. Sakurajima which is located just a short ferry ride from Kagoshima would be the perfect day trip on a fine weather day. The ferry ride was comfortable and scenic as one enjoys the view of this active volcano from the ferry deck. Upon disembark, I felt abit lost thou... After enquiry, found... More

I made a quick visit to this Island, I kinda left it at the last minute in the day (around 4:45pm), The ferries to the island were frequent and if you have a JR pass, it is all covered. I originally wanted to board the bus to do a bus ride tour but I was told the last bus left... More

This active volcano is worth a visit by ferry and by bus. Very impressive when it sends a plume of ashes up in the sky. Beautiful coastline around it. Probably worth an overnight stay.

Just a short journey from Kagoshima to Sakurajima by ferry, you may enjoy a quiet time with cats and volcano. Foot bath inside the national park was great.

Well recommended to visit Sakurajima. Just a short hop away by ferry. Unfortunately the day I visited was rainy which prevented me from seeing the volcano in its full glory, nevertheless I was able to see it in a different perspective. I'd probably suggest to rent a car which can be done on the island just across from the ferry... More

I have been to Kagoshima 3 times and each time this "Island" is a must visit. I guess it's the charm to set foot on an active volcano island! ;)
