Compared to the statue near Ueno Park in Tokyo, this one is bigger, and depicts Saigo Takamori in military attire. Close to the Prefectural Museum and other attractions, this man played an instrumental role in the modernization of Japan. Find out more about him at the Museum of the Meiji Restoration near Kagoshima Chuo (Central) Station.

I was very glad to have found the statue and the temple next door while exploring on foot around Kagoshima.

It is good to stop by Saigo Takamori Statue if interested in Japanese History. The location is just near the bus stop of Cityview bus and also few minutes walk to Terukuni jinja. I will say it is a must-see point.

See this statue while taking the City Tour bus along with other high points of the area. Saigo-san is Japanese hero of the late 19th century.

Saigo Takamori is an important contributor to the Meji Restoration and a hero of kagoshima. But if you are not familiar with Japanese history, this statue does not mean much to you.

This spot marks an important figure in the history of the Kagoshima region in the post Samarai days in southern Japan. It also offers a nice drive and great views of the city.

At least one of these stars is because Saigo Takamori was a pretty cool guy. If you know a bit about the local history, it's cool to check this one out.

There is a plaque explaining a little history next to the statue and other famous statues and monuments around the same area.

a stern looking statue definitely different from one in the Ueno.just located in the centre of city.around this statue many historical sights are scattered.Saigo was the most respected person during Meiji restoration by people in japan, this statue is wearing a military uniform in stead that Ueno wearing a jkpknese summer wear, which Saigo,s wife said this does not look like.
