We went to the Shurijo Castle with a group of 10 people. This stop is well worth the time and investment.

I went during my fall vacation working as a teacher in Japan. I flew to Okinawa by JetStar ( a local airline which is really cheap) and met a few locals who told me about this castle. I went to the castle by taxi (...More

It's important to remember the Castle is a reconstruction, not the original. However, with a good tour guide, the history can come alive (eg contrasts between the Chinese and Japanese sections). As other reviewers have indicated, it can get very crowded, so try to go...More

I have been to Shuri twice now and it is an amazing place. They host all kinds of festivals and it is very informative. A blend of a historical site and a functional museum. Many great views of the city and of the castle itself....More

It's definitely worth seeing if you are into the Japanese culture. Too bad it was under construction when we visited. Also, make sure to bring lots of water if you go during the hot summer months.

The castle is gigantic including a nice yard. There are good amount of great artwork and furnitures inside the main hall reflecting Ryukyu culture with China influence due to the active trade.
