Constructed in the 1600s, this castle was originally named Otakasaka after the hill on which it resides. Built to defend the city below, the structure was partially damaged by a fire in the early 1700s but never faced a formal attack.

The castle sits atop the hill and offers a great view of Kochi city. Requires many steps to reach the top but definitely worth it. Most displays have English description. 桜の季節は 初めて行きました 階段があるのでお城としては 凄く良いと思う 景色も良く、料金も高くないのでオススメ ただk英語の説明がないので もう少し英語表記が多いと良いと思う

One is greeted with the ornately carved giant gates adorned with bronze plates (with their greenish stains) as you snake up the stone steps to the top of the hill where the Kochi Castle is majestically nestled. For those with weaker knees, there are wooden sticks one can borrow to help you negotiate the steps. Once on top, one is... More

Nice place to visit. Classic Japanese castle, one of the 12 that has survived the years. As with most 'original' castles in Japan it seems not that old due to restauration etc. Great view over Kochi city, defenitly worth visiting.

Japan is bursting with castles, they are all over the country. Castles are one of the reasons I wanted to visit Japan, to take a step back into ancient history, the time of the warring states, the time of Edo and soforth. But after visiting several of these ancient fortresses, I started to see the same things - large stone... More

The Castle is high on a hill overlooking Kochi. It's in excellent shape and has some very interesting hostory as well as nice gardens and views over the city. It is not too difficult to walk up.

It is a fair way up to the castle but there are wonderful views from up there, there is a lovely garden at the foot of the garden too and there is a beautiful tapestry in the castle and they sell a lovely puzzle of the castle at the little shop at the entrance. This is a very nice excursion... More

If you can time the visit, do it on Sunday. Sunday morning there is a Sunday market on a road leading to the Castle. Do it together with the Castle visit in a goal. The Castle is beautiful and well preserved. It is on a hill and hence required some climbing. The view of the city from the Castle is... More

One of the best preserved castles in Japan. Set in a well kept park the climb up the castle hill was especially beautiful in the fall and provides many viewing points of both the foliage and different angles of the castle architecture. The main keep can be visited for a fee and from there you have a great view of... More

Another superb original castle on Shikoku Island! We love Kochi City & its Castle. Just a short walk from our hotel, the castle is nicely perched on a hilltop (thus many steps to manoeuvre on the way up). We just managed to reach there for a beautiful sunset from the Tenshu. I think just before castle closing time (5pm during... More
