This island may have been very beautiful before, but now, due to disorderly management and no restrictions on island access and tourist activities, all the corals are dead and there are few fish. When snorkeling, you can see large areas of dead corals, which is particularly sad.
In addition, the facilities on the island are average. At around 2 pm, there is no fresh water. There is no water in the bathroom and shower.
The disorderly management also lies in the fact that all the boats on the islands of the entire National Marine Park are privately operated and there is no unified operation and management. So the service you can get and whether you can get on the boat on time depends on the boat company you buy the ticket from. It is particularly important to note that the public windows 1-5 at the pier (which look public and sell tickets) actually transfer you to various private companies. It is better to do your homework in advance and find a shipping company that is guaranteed and has many of its own boats.
I would like to specifically mention the SUNNY RAINBOW company at the lightning protection window No. 9. They seem to have only one boat of their own, because I only saw one boat with their name on it all day, and they charter very few boats. When we were on the island, guests from other boat companies kept leaving. Because we were sold to them by the window in front, we had to wait for more than an hour before we could get on the boat. When we arrived on the island and wanted to play water sports, we waited for more than an hour and were told that we couldn't play because of the weather change. (But if the company with more boats had already arranged the activities before that). The most outrageous thing was that when we were leaving the island, we waited for more than two hours before they found another boat from another company. Almost all the guests from other companies left the island, but we were stranded on the island because we were sold to them. Guests who started waiting for the boat earlier said that they didn't have a boat to pick up guests from the island all afternoon, and the island hopping tour was completely delayed.
In short, Kota Kinabalu is completely squandering their ocean and tourism resources

It's a small island that you can get to by boat from Kota Kinabalu. You can only stay at the front part of the island and you have to pay 25 ringgit to enter. I don't know what for, everything is littered. The whole sea is littered, the beach is littered. And you can't really swim either.

Just back from Manutik Islands, snorkeling. The waters are clear, the beach is clean unlike many online feedbback. Try to visit this and other islands like the Sapi Islands before some big countries open their borders and swarm and dirty the beaches all over again. Should consider using the Sutera jetty to reach the islands (served by Derek who is very friendly and professional) as there is only one operator there (maybe one or two more ?) instead of the Jesselton Point which is like a fish market of multiple operators. The beach is teeming with fishes just near the shorer provided inconsiderate tourists do not pollute the place.

Gorgeous blue sea, even though we are near the shore, left us totally captivated by the sea view upon reaching the island. When snorkeling, you can observe the fish beneath the water. Although the island is not very large, we thoroughly enjoyed our walk around it. It was my first time going island hopping and I regretted not bringing proper swimming shoes because the seabed was sharp due to coral reefs. I recommend wearing boots or swimming shoes when snorkeling.
During our visit, the wind was blowing strongly. I suppose it must have been the December season.

What a disappointment! There is nothing I can really recommend about our trip to the island. The boat transfer was relatively expensive. The small island was utterly overrun with thousands of tourists. The snorkelling area is pitifully small and the reefs are in terrible shape-not least because most of the thousands of people snorkelling can barely swim, let alone snorkel. The facilities are generally pretty shabby. If you are looking for decent snorkelling and a beautiful, peaceful beach experience- try somewhere else. I suppose the only positive is that the jetty is somewhat photogenic.

The island is very pretty and could be even more so if it was run better. Unfortunately, every day hordes of rowdy Chinese tourists arrive who unfortunately are not very polite and often leave rubbish lying around. Moreover, most of them, barely afloat, jump unconsciously into the sea with lifebuoys and often to rest they stand on corals.
Apart from that you can find nice and quiet corners, away from the pier.
The seabed is rather gray and has a damaged coral reef but nevertheless snorkeling is still pleasant; I found angelfish, parrot, crossbow, trumpet, staff sergeants, a sea snake, small moray eels, many anemones with clownfish and others.
The island can be reached in about 20 minutes from Jesselton Pier with the ferry service that departs continuously; the boats are a little run down and run a lot, Recommendation to ask to decrease the speed. Look at the weather forecast because in the afternoon it often rains and in ten minutes heavy thunderstorms arrive with which it is not pleasant to go to sea to return to KK.

This is more like it, amazing little Island. They have roped off areas where careless tourists cannot go hence the coral and fish life is better for off the beach snorkelling. Not as many people as the bigger island and cleaner water.

Very nice beach not so busy and that is what I like. We did some snorkeling there and we saw a lot of clown fish and zebra fish and even a stingray. It is nice that they have picnic tables to sit on. Also the have outside showers to get rid of the salt. They have a restaurant but food waiting is 1.5 hours crazy. Maybe change to a smaller menu that will help.

In August very crowded with tourists. Transfers from / to mainland somewhat chaotic. The stand is quite narrow and there are some sea urchins in the water, so you can only go a few meters into the water. Water sandals are a good idea. But certainly a little paradise in the quieter months. If you only want to experience beach, consider booking directly here instead of in KK or Tanjung Aru, where the beaches were not so clean.

l bought a package for 2 islands manukan and sapi but the operator for their convenience took us to mamutik instead of Sapi.
Totally not recommended. There Is nothing and beaches not really beautiful to explore. A lot of sand flies and water is not clean. Water is rougher compare to manukan island. You are limited to a very small area to swimm, snorkel and play. Can even see a single fish around. No proper resting benches for people to sit. Only has a swing tied to a tree to swing around for photo shoot only. In 15 minutes you are done hoping to leave the island.

Hi, If you are in family group of 10 or more. You may seek the local tour operator to arrange one boat for your group. Alternatively, you may bought the land tour at hotel booth and there will arrange the pickup for you. We there in a group of 10, so is much convenience for the tour operator t arrange. On Mamutik Island, it is rather crowded by tourist. Tourist is allow to wear life jacket and snorkelling at the left and right side of the jetty. We tested both side and felt the one at right side is the best. Within 6 meters from beach, there is almost no coral at all,...just white sand at ground. However, once you cross the line, the world is really amazing. However, watch-out of the sharp coral beneath as it is not really depth (about 3-4 feets). Important note: Do not disturb or stand on the coral. Enjoy !!!

We will be traveling with a 4yr old and 2yr old.....is this place kid friendly and does it have any activities for these children
Written June 16, 2017
There isn't much for a 4 yr old and a 2 yr old except playing in the water (sea and/or pool) and on the sand. It can get very hot by the beach so take the necessary precautions. Also, be sure to stay in the areas designated for swimming as there are boats plying between Mamutik and the nearby islands

Does anyone know anything about accommodation being built on the island - I read it would be ready this year sometime?
Written January 7, 2017
not sure about the accommodation on the island -but bear in mind all food/drink on the island is way more expensive than the mainland - so any accommodation built there will almost certainly fall into the "luxury" bracket pricewise , easy enough to go there any time -just head to jesselton pier - book/pay and be on the island within half an hour

hi guys. may i know the fees for island hoping? is it included with manukan and sapi islands as well ?
Written September 6, 2016
You can negotiate at Kota Kinabalu habour any kind of island hopping before you start. Small conservation fees have to be paid once you enter some of these islands in addition.

Where do the cruise ships dock in relation to Jessleton pier. We will be on Celebrity Century.
Written January 18, 2015
The cruise ship The World was docked not far from Jessleton at a private dock when we were there in August.
