We were on a tour organised in advance from Walvis Bay up to Swakopmund, so we didn't have to worry about the permits which other reviewers have mentioned. Turning off the main road north we soon had a change of scene as we headed away from the sand into the "stony" desert to what they called the "moon landscape". It... More

The incredible landscape that resembles the moon's surface, conceals a rare and quite "ugly" plants - Welwitschia. very interesting and remarkable. For passage must be paid in advance at the center of Swakopmund.

Quite a long drive, but well worth it. Good to turn off and make a detour to Goanikontes Guest Farm and drive to this oasis through the moonscape.

We just discovered by accident that you need to buy a permit from the NWR office in town, which delayed us. Then an awe-inspiring drive through the desert - visiting the "moonscape" and the oasis - but the welwitschia are a long way, the gravel road - initially very good - was deteriorating, and - bizarrely - a storm was... This half-day drive into the desert is well worthwhile, despite sections of the road having bad corrugations. The very reasonable entry permit is obtainable from the Conservation Office in Swakopmund. Welwitschia plants, some of them over 1500 years old, really are amazing, and a lot of effort has been put into the information provided along the route. But it's not... More

These plants do not look specially beautiful, but the fact that they can live over thousand years is truly remarkable. Patches of these plants can be seen in many parts of the Namibi-Naukluft park and even in the skeleton coast park. We enjoyed learning about them

Worth the effort in buying a permit at Namibia Nature Conservation to have a look at these plants which are ± 1600 years old living the desert. Route map provided with the permit Beautiful scenic route past the Moon Scapes
