To get here you would need to hire a 4 wheel drive. The police at the check post are extremely strict. Hire one from the town just before the climb, you’ll save money.
The trip is worth both the drive and the views. It could get a bit nippy so carry a wind cheater or a light woollen with you.

The area is very nice but unluckily the Hotel was bad, Dusit D2 Naseem resort, as we had very bad experience with it && does not deserve the money I paid for it although I am a golden member of Dusit Thani series but this resort might affect the reputation of this series

Wild camping on the mountain summit. Watching both the Sun rise and set is as wonderful as falling asleep under the stars with very little light pollution. The world seems to have come to peace with itself here.

Beautiful stop in Oman, the green mountains offer a fantastic view from the top.
In order to get to the top of the Jabal Al Akhdar and access the hotels (Alila, Anantara…) you need a 4x4 car.
If you don’t have one, you need to book a private driver. The ones proposed by the hotels are very expensive (Anantara told us 65 OMR round trip).
During our stay, we met an extremely nice driver, Saïd, who we highly recommend. He proposed to drive us for a very fair price (35 OMR round trip, but we gave him 40 OMR). He spontaneously gave us tour of the Jabal Al Akhdar musts to visit (Seeq village, rose distillery, rose gardens…) and was very caring since I was pregnant (drove slowly, proposed toilet stops..).
He can drive you around, not only to jabal Al Akhdar, but also Muscat and other places in the country. He is also a guide.
You can contact him through whatsapp at this number: +96898111259

I have a reservation at Anantara for Thursday 21st and I will be driving from Dubai. I have a sports sedan (Audi S6) which is quattro all wheel drive. Is there any chance I will be allowed to drive up the mountain once I get to the police checkpoint?
If I am not permitted, can I leave my car at the checkpoint and ask the hotel to pick me up? Is leaving the car a safe option?

Can you tell me the temperatures (day) expectable in Dec/Jan? Thx

Eastbourne, UK244 contributions
I can't be sure but the temperature certainly drops as you go up the hill from Nazwa. We were there in March and it was around 20-22C during the day but drops at night. My guess would be 16-17C during the day and down to zero at night

Are there safe hikes in the area for children aged 8 and 10? I wish to avoid narrow pathways with sheer drops! Many thanks for your help

Yes there are some hikes that go through villages that are very pleasant and do not have steep drops but still have excellent views and scenery.

How does one visit the rose distilleries? Do you suggest a tour operator or can we just go there and pop into any distillery we can spot?

No need for tour operator, it’s very small place you will finish it in one or two days
