It is hard to recommend this site. I was traveling a loop from Nizwa to Bahia and stopped here to walk around. The government has built a structure of some sort that looks like it might serve as an entry, but there was no one there. The site itself is simply ruins, it has not been tended, and there is no orientation or information. I did get an amazing photo of a spider that had built a large web. Alas, this site needs a lot of work before it can be recommended as anything other than a quick stop while on the way from one point to another; it is definitely not a destination of its own.

this must be the ruins that we visited not too far from the Nizwa Fort and near the aqueduct. Beautiful Instagrammable views of ancient, broken down mud homes. It's a bit of a hike up through broken stairways, but definitely worthwhile.

It's been a lifetime ago that I was there (1983), but I still remember it to this day. Left by the Sultan as a warning to others not to challenge his rule. Well worth the effort to get there if you're visiting Nizwa (which I also HIGHLY recommend).

Its not that much worth to go an see the ruin. If you are passing through Tanuf, then may have a visit.
Only thing is, you may get a picture of how the place was years ago.

Tucked against the base of the mountain right next to the wadi, the ruins of Old Tanuf are impossible to miss. This was once an important village in the Jebal Akhdar mountain range, as the crumbling structures bear testament to. But unlike the fabled ruins of many places in Oman such as the lost city of Ubhar sunk beneath desert sands, and others abandoned to Jinn and history, Tanuf was "lost" only recently in the long time-line of the Sultanate's history, and her ghosts are of a more tragic kind.

A real natures delight during the wadi season to spend time here besides the rocky mountaineous terrain. Fresh cool waters besides a nice valley and of course crossing it is mind blowing. Also great to camp and set up your barbeque. Loved the place but make a vist during the wadi time. Enquire about the wadi with the locals and then only visit. Happy adventure.

I'm really pleased we stopped here. We had a hire car and it was easy enough to find. What I particularly liked was that we were the only people there so you really had a chance to explore and get great photos without having to avoid others! Atmospheric and bigger than I expected e liked this place and would recommend it.

Tanuf ruins sit between Nizwa and Bahla (roughly). If you are going to Nizwa or Bahla it is worth swinging by Tanuf to see the old village. The village has working underground waterways that are a timely reminder that an advanced irrigation system brought life to this village.
The village was made from mud bricks and it probably made it a little bit harder to strafe when it came under attack back in the 1950s.
Don't know the back story as to why it came under attack by the RAF in the 50s. I didn't know that Britain was at war with Oman back then. Looks like you learn something new every day.
Somebody said they had WMD. Don't know if it's true. The RAF thought so. Hence the village no longer stands.
Nevertheless. I wouldn't go out your way to go here. However, if you are going between Nizwa and Bahla. Pass by for a look.

If you happen to driving in the area the Tanuf Ruins are worth a stop to wander around. Really interesting and some great photo opportunities. If you have your 4x4 then take an hour to travel up Wadi Tanuf which lies just behind (being careful if there has been recent rains)
