Very nice building with architecture style, but also you can visit the Art Gallery inside, with romanian and international paintings.

Banffy Palace has been under renovation/reconstruction, with Europan funds, for the last few years. There is no public transport from Cluj-Napoca to Banffy, so you need a car. If you make the 20-km trip from Cluj-Napoca just for Banffy, it's best to be aware that (as of mid-2013) the renovations are not complete; the coffee shop may or may not be open; and there is nowhere to eat or drink nearby. That said, the ruins have an air of bygone grandeur.

We are a group of friends who city break across Europe and always visit the local art museums. This is one of the most disappointing. Building is impressive though a bit grubby at present and most is off limits.
Gallery space upstairs is good in terms of space and light. Rooms needing attention.
Art itself is nothing special with exception of Gregorescu and Elena Popea. Rest of very average quality.
In another part of ground floor is another gallery space and at the moment very good exhibition of Romanian artist Mattis-Teutsch whose work compares well with early Kandinsky and Malevich. If you are around while this is on go see.

The palace was owned by the Banffy family, a noble family from Transylvania. The famous composer Franz Liszt gave some concerts there and it was also visited by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sissi. It now hosts the Musem of Art. A must see if you visit the city.

In this palace you can find the National Museum of Art from Cluj-Napoca witch was EMYA Award nominee for the European Museum of the Year 1997. So i think is a great place where you can start exploring the city.
Exactly in the city center.

Banffy is an interesting palace with a tremendous history. It is a shame that it is literally crumbling away. Today part of it is an art museum which deserves higher than my overall rating. But the palace could be put to so much better use with period furnishings in addition to the artwork. The deterioration of the structure after years of neglect is quite evident and one can only hope that funds from somewhere can be found to save it and restore Banffy to its glory.

Banffy Palace is considerând the most important baroque building in Transsylvania and in Romania ; the building began in 1774 and was siege of Duke of Banffy the governor of Transsylvania; it now houses the National Museum of Art which is the most important Museum of Art in Transsylvania and second after the National Museum of Art in Bucharest; besides paintings of the most renowned Romanian masters, there are a lot of paintings of foreign masters, especially Dutch,Italian,French,German

After reading Banffy's Transylvania Trilogy I would have gone just for the exposure to the author's "city" home. (The country home outside Cluj was destroyed by the Nazis when Banffy was discovered trying to make a separate peace with the Allies.) The earlier material is sparse and of mixed quality and condition, but the works from the Nineteenth Century on are quite strong with an especially good representation of Nicolai Grigorescu.

Banffy castle in Bonchida (Bontida) is being restored. Please note that the restauration als serves as a training ground for young restaurators.

Since I have last been here (five years ago) progress has clearly been made, but it is slow!
