The citadel area looks great after the restoration works. You can admire the old walls and bastions and the Reformed church as well. The park nearby is also nice. Worth stopping by.

Built in the XVth century - over the ages of history was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times - the fortress of Targu Mures has entered in 2011 into a an extensive refurbishment process to get to the look it has nowadays.
It does look good, however some of the details still need work - you can walk along the rampart on a walkway but the bastions are not open for visiting. You can see the Reformed church but is not open all day so you could enter and visit it- dependent on day and hour you just might but there is no program for visiting on display.
Several section have still work in progress inside the courtyard , for sure it will be great once finished.
Overall interesting - if you go on a guided tour it will be more interesting - however very little explanation is to be found by the solo traveler.
The courtyard is generous , and favored by the locals for walks and by the children as a great playground.
Terraces are open in the yard so you can enjoy a meal or have some beverages.
Entrance to the fortress is free of charge - this is a good point in the end.
Overall a nice place , for those of you into history for sure it will be very interesting and when you are in Targu Mures I recommend you visit the fortress since it is right there in the middle of the city.

After renovation, Targu Mures Fortress became a lovely combination of park, museum and restaurants. There is also a gothic church inside the citadel.
There are actually two restaurants in site, both with cozy terraces, offering views over the park.
We actually ended up in one of these restaurants, drinking beer and watching the people passing by. The towers of the iconic buildings in Targu Mures are visible behind the fortress walls and they look great at sunset.
Pleaseant and relaxing experience overall.
Entering the fortress is free of charge.

For all those who love history it's a must see. You can get an idea of what life was like there some decades ago. Some music festivals are also held in the area.

Well kept, inside the fortress is a small, green park with shady trees. Do try the icecream at one of the entrances. A lot of young people and families with small kids. There are expositions/shows from time to time. Very close to the center, at one end of the central walkway.

It is an old fortress build 400 years ago and well maintained. Big place inside with grass and side walks where is nice to spend time with kids. It has a lot of stairs which kids love to climb on. Other things to visit inside.

Beyond the impressive walks of the fortress lies a sorry tale but one all too common in the states of former communist Europe. Renovation and restoration work seems to have started along with a major excavation of the innards of the fortress but at the time I was there little if anything seemed to be happening, presumably no money. Judging by the copious amounts of empty liquor bottles this would appear to be the place of pilgrimage for the town's illicit teenage drinkers. Walkways have been installed in parts along the inside of the main walls though take care as occasionally they seem to stop leaving you teetering on the brink. Rather disconcertingly there were what appeared to be human remains exposed by the archaeological excavations next to the only part of the complex in action - the church. There being a wedding in progress, a peek inside was off the agenda.
