As a first neighbor country I am very familiar with the 1989 Romanian revolution.
I watched it and cheered for the heroic Romanian people who within few days overthrew the Causescu dictatorship that opressed the entire Nation for decades.
Many people probably don't know that the revolution didn't start in the capital city of Bucharest, but here in Timisoara at the Opera Square.
In my opinion this museum deserves much more attention and efforts from the City/Country officials.
First of all, it should be free to visit (like many such across eastern Europe) in order to attract much more visitors to learn about it.
The museum layout and appearance should be improved and modernized, as currently it looks very depressive and neglected.
Working hours should be extended and open on Sundays.

This is not a fancy museum. Much of it involves reading displays on the wall and looking at photos. But this is such an important museum for documenting the story of Romania’s liberation from Communism and Timisoara’s leading role. It should not be missed! The museum provides excellent information and by visiting you are also helping to keep the story and spirit of the 1989 heroes alive. There are some good descriptions (and eerily recent artifacts) in one exhibit about life under communism in Romania. Then there is another section that takes you through the events in Timisoara in December 1989 when the city became the first to be free. There’s also some rotating exhibits upstairs. The staff was welcoming when we arrived and happy to share info. Even though the museum could benefit from a greater investment, it is absolutely worth it to take the time to visit, read, and reflect on this powerful moment in Romania’s history.

This Revolution Exhibition has stood the test of time - it is still very relevant today. The events of December 1989 are brilliantly laid-out, along with the history leading up to them, and a view of the future they enabled.
There is a wealth of information available to take-in, including rooms with sounds and pictures that almost make you feel like you're there. There is also quite a long video to watch, detailing the actions of the main players and how events played out as the days rolled by.
Wonderful memorial to a historically important event. Highly recommended.

This museum is a must see if you want to understand the 1989 Revolution. The revolution began in Timisoara. I saw the introductory video and walked through the many exhibits on two floors. You can watch the revolution unfold in several rooms, each of which focuses on one or two days in December 1989. There were photos and children's art as well as art installations. It is a comprehensive museum and I would highly recommend a visit here.

This is a must see. Beautiful overview of the start of the revolution in Romania. The start in Timisoara and then the other cities. Beautifully presented in images and text. Now on the first floor there is a temporary exhibition of all the memorial statues in the city. Also very worthwhile

History should always be remembered. I visited this memorial for the first time in 2013 and then went back in 2023. It is a wonderful projects that honours the heroes of the anti-communist revolution in Timisoara, while also remembering aspects of the totalitarian regime all around Romania, resistance movements, propaganda, the cult of personality of Nicolae Ceausescu. The exhibit has clear information written in Romanian and English languages and the staff is really friendly.

December 1989 - in the heart of every Romanian - who was not a communist party leader or working for the "Securitate" (the Romanian Secret Police) or is not a descendent of those - was a turning point , it was the times where this country whom suffered the scourge of Communism for 44 years - has raised and stood as one and disposed of tyranny ...
It all started in Timisoara - on 15th of December - a few hundreds of protestants gathered in the St. Mary square.
For the communist's regime of Romania , it all went downhill from there, on the 16th of December the protests escalated. On the 17th of December the first shooting has started - on the 18th the "bloodbath" was on , continued on the 19th of December and Timisoara was the first free city in 20th of December 1989.
All these episodes are vividly presented by this Museum - and even more you will find here:
- life under the communist booth from 1945 till 1989
- cold war - and its implication for Romania
- the Revolution from 15th till the 25th of December when Ceausescu and his wife were trialed and faced the firing squad.
- The chapel for the fallen
- the room of the Monuments.
and more and more information about the Revolution. I will not tell you all - go and check it out, see for yourself - the exhibits are great and the information nicely structured, the building housing the expo is in great need of refurbishment.
Nonetheless the experience is not dimmed by the building ... it is a genuine, impressive and immersive experience ... especially the movie played at the end of your visit.
I recommend you allocate about 3 hours for your visit - there is a lot to see. hear and understand.

This place is hard to find. It was next to a park and an university. Close on Sunday, but open on Monday to Sat. The film is for me very interesting. In the beginning, I am still a bit skeptical about Timisoara's importance in Romania. After the the film, I realized that it stands for the mother of democracy. Outside of museum you can find a piece of Berlin Wall stone with drawing. A place to get to know the history of Timisoara. After this visit, I like Timisoara a lot more.

The 20-minute documentary on what happened in Timisoara in December 1989 I found the most instructive. There is one with English and one with German subtitles. The point that Ceausescu ordered to shoot at demonstrators was well made. Still for me no excuse for the show trial of the Ceausescu's afterwards. Did the executions really stop 'the terrorists' ? Or was it the fact that Iliescu (another communist party boss) took power? Who were these terrorists that emerged out of nowhere and started killing people at random? Were they Securitate (communist secret service)? Was their objective to convince the demonstrators they needed 'their police and their army'.Was it really a revolution or were demonstrations manipulated to facilitate a coup d'état? Still many unanswered questions after such a long period of time.

The Museum is tucked away and not very well signposted. It is in an old Army Barracks building which is very unassuming and has seen better days. It is small and free to enter although they do ask for donations. We chose to give 20 leu each, approximately £5 per person.
This Museum is a hidden gem! The gentleman running it is incredibly passionate about the history of Timișoara and was injured in the unrest in 1989 which spearheaded the overthrowing of Communist rule in Romania. He was at the Museum and although he did not speak good English he showed us various exhibits in different rooms and the photo of himself when he was in hospital recovering from injuries received during the conflict.
The visit starts with an entry in the guest book by each person visiting and then we were shown a film about the 1989 Revolution. This had English subtitles.
We were then shown around the Museum by the Hungarian secretary who spoke very good English. She explained the hidden meaning in anti-communist paintings which are displayed.
The Museum is spread over two floors and a few small rooms and consists of memorabilia, artefacts, posters, newspaper clipping and many many photographs explain the history of Timisoara and there are also detailed time lines and art exhibits.
Not all of it has an English translation but it is relatively easy to get a feel for what is being shown.
The cruel acts of Nicolae Ceaușescu, Former Communist President of Romania, against the people of Timișoara should not be forgottten.
Nor should the bravery shown and sacrifice of so many go unnoticed.
I was incredibly moved by our visit and my partner found it more detailed and informative than what he already knew.
