For this very old russian orthodox monastery, we had to go down to the south from Veliky Novgorod. It is located very near to the source of river Volhov and its outflow from the lake Ilmen. We had taken the bus from the bus station in Novgorod and paid for the tickets 22 ruble, per person. The monastery is very... More

I had planned to go straight to Vitoslavlitsy Museum but when the bus stopped, I got off at the monastery. And I don't regret it at all. It's a peaceful nice place with several beautiful churches. St George's cathedral dates from the 12th century and has some original wall paintings. Very impressive! Visit is free, so don't hesitate to stop... More

You can combine this monastery with the visit of Vitoslavlitsy park, it is just a 15 minutes walk down the road. Idyllic situated at the embankment of the Ilmen lake. There is a beautiful beach behind the monastery, ideally for a shashlik picnic with superb view on the lake. A quite and peaceful piece of earth.

An important addition to visiting St. Sophia Cathedral, this monastery is nearby, in a beautiful riverfront setting with fabulous friezes on the walls. The stories of its restoration and what transpired here throughout history are fascinating. We visited in late March and the temperature inside the church building was at least twenty degrees colder than the temperature outside.

this is a monastery complex part of which is open to the public. The churches we saw there were very atmospheric and authentic. Staff were pleasant and helpful. It is next to a beach on the river Volkhov and the other side is a collection of wooden buildings and a restaurant. It is some way from centre (we used taxi)

This monastery is very close to the river. Our kids wanted to go see the river first and since it was summer they wanted to get in the water. Everything is Green around the monastery. The monastery was under re-construction and we where only able to see part of it. The paintings, that we saw, where all beautiful.

We visited Yuriev Monastery in December. And from one side it is better to see it in summer, when the trees and grass are green and you can also enjoy view of Ilmen Lake. But in winter there is almost no tourists (in summer crowds of them) and only this time you can fully understand the calm and peace of... More
