Erarta brings under one roof Russia's largest private Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (with over 2,000 works in its collection) and one of the branches of its international Galleries (others located in London, New York and Zurich). Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm

We travelled there by public transport, by metro and then by bus - we missed our stop as the museum was not visible from the bus route and we weren't able to ask owing to our lack of Russian. Nonetheless it was a bit of an adventure! Take an Uber if you are not confident. The museum itself was a... More

Here on the Vasilyevsky Island, almost in the opposite corner from the place where is located the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, stands this very interesting museum of modern arts. In the museum, there is one permanent collection counting over 2000 works by many artists from all over the country. One who is interested in the contemporary art, here can find... More

Great place to discover modern art. There are a lot of different temporary exhibitions, which change almost every 3-4 months. That gives you the possibility to learn world famous collections (like Fellini Costumes) along with work of local artists. I've heard about U-Spaces but unfortunately didn't visit any of those. Looking forward to come back again!

Great hours for this museum and the staff were super friendly. The C215 (temporary) exhibit is almost a must see and I think that was my favorite.

A vibrant, full of energy modern art museum. They have some very interesting objects and installations, but u-spaces is something that shouldn't be missed. U-space is an installation in the separate which is available only for a room visitor for 15 minutes. We were doubtful at first about visiting a modern art museum, as St Petersburg has much history and antiquities to offer. But it turned out great - the ERARTA has its own dash of vibrancy and quirkiness, from the exhibitions to its lifts, and the lovely restaurant in the basement. Moreover, it's fascinating to see how the new generation of... More

Dear Jean L, thank you for your feedback. Of course, during your stay at St.Petersburg, to visit classic museums is a ‘must’. Though, every contemporary art museum in every country gives a very special key to its history, peoples’ mentality etc. So Erarta is worth seeing as well as Hermitage and Russian museum. Great you’ve mentioned Erarta unique project Art-Literature(the... More

In this place I met my idea of what a modern art museum should be. Full of energy and youth. Variety of exhibitions and styles. Half of the building is dedicated to temporary exhibitions what it makes it even alive. I got a rough idea what are the tendencies of modern art in this corner of the world.

5x2 floors of one off exhibitions coupled with a stunning collection of Russian (very) modern art. On this occasion, 3 floors of stunning Sebastiao Salgado nature photos, covering more than 10 years, dominate the temporary exhibitions. Permanent collection is large scale, brave, political, in your face - brilliant. But this truly a subjective collection. It includes Belorussian brightness, Russian depression... More
