This museum is one of the largest art collections in the world so you will need a whole day. I went out of peak season and was still amazed at how busy it was, a must see!

No trip to the beautiful city of St. Petersburg would be complete without a visit to The Hermitage. Go early to avoid the crowds and you will be rewarded with viewings of priceless art and antiques, stunning opulence and grand gardens.

What an amazing place! I've been interested in the Russian monarchy for years and have read a number of their biographies, including the latest on Catherine the Great by Robert Massie. How incredible to be able to see where they lived in person up until 1904. We hired a very knowledgeable guide since we had only one day for our... More

We owe basically three Empresses for this extraordinary piece of architecture: Ianna Ioannovna, Elizaveta Petrovna and Catherine the Great. Even the most blind and tenacious members of the revolution were unable to destroy totally the imperial splendor that they achieved for most of their rooms. Fortunately for mankind we have the restored Winter Palace to enjoy. The Winter Palace became... More

Let me start this review by stating the obvious, a visit to the Hermitage is essential when travelling to St Petersburg. The sheer spectacle of this wonderful feat of architecture is just astonishing. You begin by walking through a large court with the palace shadowing your every step. Then you join what i describe as the most torturous queuing process... More
