My wife and I saw this on our own without a guide. Each room seemed to be guarded by old russian women from the time of Stalin who specialized in barking order to unsuspecting tourists. I you can arrange a private guide, it would be preferable because the museum is vast and the staff is not much help. You should... More

This is a must see - fantastic spacious rooms decorated in gold gilt + an impressive art collection - Rembrandt, Picasso, Monet and so on.

As soon as you step foot inside the Hermitage, you can feel the history and get a sense of the grandeur that came with it being a former residential palace. You can't say you've been to St. Petersburg if you don't come here. The museum is huge, I would recommend a guide.
