More modest, by Russian Orthodox standards, than some of the cathedrals in St. Petersburg but for some reason I loved St. Nicholas more. Perhaps because it is an active cathedral which means be respectful: no shorts, scarves best for women, and no camera flashes. Enjoy the live music if your timing is right. Hard to get a good photo because... More

A lovely cathedral on the banks of one of the canals and with a stunning bell tower that is separate from the main body of the church. We were able to see the interior which is Orthodox with a large number of icons. The exterior is painted white and pale blue together with gilded domes. As with many orthodox churches,... More

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral is a major Baroque Orthodox cathedral in the western part of the city. Unfortunately we were restricted to the external parts of the building on the day. Another city architectural masterpiece and probably would have warranted an excellent rating if we had been granted admittance. Still managed great photographs of the exterior.

The interior is stunning but we could not get in because it was all roped off. Only locals were allowed in at the time.

Rastrellieqsque Baroque architecture in the most beautiful color of blue, we also toured Catherine's Palace on this trip and it is the same architecture. Lovely bell towers with bright gold domes...a real storybook cathedral. Lots of naval history here.

A major Baroque Orthodox cathedral; St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral consists of two separate churches. The lower Saint Nicholas Church is located on the first floor, while the upper Epiphany Church is on the second floor. Where you can find numerous memorial plaques for the crews of the sunken Soviet submarines, including K-278 Komsomolets. The crew of the submarine K-141 Kursk... More

This church has been fully restored and has a lot of newly conserved articles of faith in the Russion Orthidox setting We visited during a service and the singing was not only of the highest standard but also very moving and atmospheric a trip into the reborn past and well worth a stop on a city tour It is not... Saint Nicholas is a small church and is used for services. This is the first church was built here in 1743 which is an Orthodox church in Baroque Style Painted blue and white. It has a beautiful bell tower. very peaceful inside. there is no entry charge. It is not really a tourist church.

This was the only cathedral we visited that felt like the Real Deal. Most of the churches and cathedrals seemed more like "cultural centers" but not Naval Cathedral. This is still an active church and maintains a sense of divine worship. It was also extremely beautiful. People were there actually praying (gasp)! In a city full of visually stand-out churches,... This Cathedral is in as well as outside very beautiful; nice colors, gold, many paintings. We were there on a Thursday, about noon. As many of the churches this Cathedral was full of people. When we were there a church service was going on. After some time a funeral was happening. It seemed to be a more or less official... More
