Walking from the Moscow Gate along the Angara River towards the Monument to the Founders of Irkutsk I then crossed the street to go to the Cathedral of The Epiphany, an unusual ecclesiastical construction in a mixture of the Byzantine, the Baroque and the Classicism. The belltower above the entrance with a steeple, not too common in Russian churches, was under restoration, when I passed by.
The cathedral, the 'Sobor Bogoyavlensky' in Russian, dates from the mid-18th century, built just a few years after the nearby Spasskaya (Savior of the Holy Face) church. Its interior is filled with frescoes and icons to an extent, that many might describe as overloaded.
The name 'Epiphany' ('manifestation' in Greek) refers to the revelation of God as incarnate in Jesus Christ, which - according to orthodoxy - happened at the baptism by St.John in the river Jordan. An event, also called 'Theophany' (apparition of God), which in Western Europe is less connected with the baptism than with the visit by the three Magi at birth. Feast day for all though is January 6th.

The Cathedral of The Epiphany, located very close to the Angara River, here in Irkutsk, Russia, sits amidst a fair number of other very interesting attractions. So this is definitely a prime area to visit here in Irkutsk.
The exterior of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral is very beautiful as is its interior.
Now for an interesting aside. I had visited the Cathedral of the Epiphany and totally missed truly seeing a pair of monumental busts along side of the Cathedral.
First you have the Monument to Saint Innocent of Alaska. His monument, along with a neighboring monument to Saint Sophronius of Irkutsk, tend to be lost so to speak in the shadows of the great Cathedral of the Epiphany.
I found out about these two monuments while researching Things to do in Irkutsk and returned to the Cathedral specifically to see them and to write a review thereof.

When I think of Russia, I think of gorgeous cathedrals midst snow-covered streets. And when I visited the Cathedral of the Epiphany, that's exactly what I found. It's a beautifully decorated church, right by the river, and very close to other attractions (if you visit this, you'll be very close to the Monument to the Founders of Siberia; the Church of Our Saviour; Eternal Flame; Kirov Square; and the Chapel of the Cathedral of Kazan icon of Virgin Mary).

I ended up finding this cathedral on a rainy day, all wet and without any plans. The outside captivated me, so I decided to enter, although I'm not a church-fan. And it was a great decision: the interior is even more impressing, with murals covering all walls from top to bottom. Really worth stopping by and visiting it!

A beautifully restored church that managed to survive the communist purge. The interior that has been restored is covered completely with colourful murals. The side wings of the interior are still under restoration but the exterior is magnificent.

I was particularly taken by this cathedral. Unique in architecture and style, it has a collection of distinctly Siberian iconography, which is quite different from the central Russian school of fairly rigid in its rules religious painting style.

Just beautiful church, colorful, yet tasteful. Perfect location allows for an easy access and a pretty walk in the neighboring river bank and other parks.

I visited this cathedral last summer. I highly recommend reading about Russian Orthodoxy and icons before visiting any Russian churches. The Russian Orthodox Church is back and it is important to understand this branch and the reasons for its influence.
