The monument is found in Labour Park and consists of two parts. The first is a sculpture of the director, Leonid Gaidai , who was born in Irkutsk. Next to Leonid is the dog barbos who is famous from "Dog Barbos and Unusual Cross", which is a 10 minute comedy done in 1961. This was one of Leonid's first acclaimed skits. Barbos, whose real name is Rex, sits looking on with a stick of dynamite held in his mouth. If you look closely at the dogs ears and Gaidai's fingers, you will see that they are shiny bright, from persons rubbing them for luck, which is a local tradition.

Opposite to Gadai, are the famous comedy trio which made his movies popular. They are known as the goof to the left, the coward in the middle and the skilled to the right. This is a scene from the iconic "Kidnapping Caucasian Style", which was filmed in 1966, where they are trying to recapture the beautiful Nina. The trio had also done a movie the previous year,"Operation Y" for which they are fondly remembered. The architect is S Demkov, and the monument was installed in 2012. There are many benches to relax and enjoy the monument, and it is also a great place to feed the many pigeons. We had also visited a sculpture of the trio in Khabarovsk.

This area is easily reached by taking Trolleybus # 3. Labour Park is a 10 minute walk from Kirov Park, if you head north on Zhelyabova Street and turn right at the Circus. Other nearby attractions include the Culture Palace, Muse sculpture and Tourist sculpture.

On central Labor Square next to the Circus and with the Rostelecom Building at the back is a monument with two sets of rather caricaturistic bronze sculptures facing each other. Russians, especially from the elder generation will immediately recognize the figures involved. Most foreigners will have to put up with the information given in Russian, English and Chinese on a nearby board.

To my mind came photographs and figures in Yerevan's restaurant 'Kavkazkaya Plennitsa', where I used to go for dinner not too long ago. It refers to one of the most famous movies of Soviet times: 'The Kaukasian Captive' of 1966, later also known in English as 'Kidnapping, Caucasian Style').

At the center of this movie were three mischievous figures: Byvalyy' (the Fool), Balbes (the Coward), Trus (the Pro), which are depicted here together in the sculpture to the west, holding hands. They are watched from the opposite side by a seated Leonid Gavai, the lanky movie director with glasses, and the dog Rex on his side, holding a stick of dynamite in his mouth, with which he became famous in the movie 'The Dog Barbos', which also involved the three crooks already mentioned and who appeared in most of Gaidai's movie-comedies.

That there is a sculpture of Leonid Gaidai here, has to do with the fact that this Siberian-born director had studied theatre in Irkutsk before going to the Moscow Institute of Cinematography and later becoming immensely successful in this country with his entertaining movies. Since they refer a lot to Soviet realities of the time, they didn't become much known abroad. The sculpture was unveiled in 2012, almost 20 years after the director had passed away.

Most probably, the monument and its symbolism will say nothing to you if you're not Russian but every grown-up citizen of this country knows his films literally by heart. Doubt it? Well, find his comedies in the net and judge their brilliance by yourself. Some examples to start with - Operation Y, Kidnapping Caucasian Style, The Diamond Arm and Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future. You'll damn like them!

To be honest, I have unknowingly by-passed these two statues on several visits to this square that encompasses the Circus Irkutsk. There are actually two separate statues each consisting of several figures. One of statues is of Leonid Gaidai and his dog Barbos / or Rex. Across from the statue of Leonid Gaidai and Barbos is another statue consisting of three figures that represent a trio of fame in Mr. Gaidai's history.

When looking back to my trip to Siberia and Irkutsk I find that I have missed many monuments and nice attractions but happy not missed the monument of Leonid Gaidai.
For unknown reason it seems to me similar to Tin Tin if he was older;-) and also a friend of mine, film maker with the same figure as Leonid in this form. Love it.

There is a big sculpture in the city centre. It's a good and popular place for pictures. The guy is a famous Russian director and very famous characters too. Probably it's not worth visiting if you are not a fan of Russian cinematography.
