Madinah has changed so much in architecture and infrastructure. I miss the large areas of date palm trees and so many desert camels, horses and farm animals. But I saw that there is lot of space and rich soil of Madinah to create new farms of olives and date palm trees, horse racing and riding stables and wooden compounds as we see in United States, camel riding pathways across the desert and away from motorways. The museums should include these historical features of Madinah since ancient times to our times.

Should not miss this place when in Madinah. Well mentioned Sirah Rasullullah.
From the birth of our Prophet to his journey in spreading Islam was visualised very well. My family and I love it very much.

There are two main places worth visiting outside of the Prophet's Mosque in Madina; this is one of them (and the other is the Hejaz Railway Museum).
Take an Uber here if you want to avoid being scammed by the local taxi drivers or want to avoid haggling. It cost us 15 Riyals one way.
The museum has some really interesting models and artefacts. They offer tours but depending on which day and time you arrive they may only have some running, and in only specific languages. When we visited they only had an Urdu tour that afternoon so it may be best to ring beforehand.
The history of the city is laid out very well, documenting the landscape, the people and how it's been shaped over the years. One of the most interesting parts of the tour was the evolution of the Prophet's Mosque from a house, courtyard and home to the massive complex it is now.
When so little history and culture is missing from the Saudi cities, it's nice to see them showing some responsibility in preserving and sharing history.
Outside the museum entrance is an artist calligrapher, a fine art in the islamic world. He does some great work and will write any name onto a framed board as a souvenir - worth it as this is a dying art I suspect!

Walkable distance from Masjid Nabawi gate-6 (about 18 minutes). This is not to be missed. An old railway station during Ottoman rule converted to a small museum. There are lot of informative antiques and scriptures. Those who are passionate on history and want to spend time reading, seeing and knowing, this is the perfect place.
It talks about the history of ancient Madina (Yathrib), genealogy of prophet, ancient hand tools, astronomical tools, qur-aan, coins etc.
For elderly, going up on stairs is not very easy. Upstairs, some rooms are equipped with computer screens but was not working. No entry fee. Less parking area nearby.
As a museum visited by 100s of thousands every month, it needs a lot of improvement in quality and facilities so as to add value and to attract more people.
There is a beautiful Turkish Masjid just beside the Museum.

This museum is mostly unknown to many.
But it is definitelty worth a mention.
Many people tend to visit Madeena Munawwara without knowing the bits of history.
This museum helps all to have a glimpse of the life in Madeena Munawwarah some years back.
Must visit/

A temporary exhibition on the life and times of our last Prophet, being held in the hall beside the Prophet's Mosque. An exhaustive pictorial depiction giving one a very good idea of the history during and after those great and difficult days.
There was also an exhibition on the 99 names of Almighty Allah which was quite interesting with beautiful calligraphy. But I wish that the organizers had spelt the word "entrance" correctly. Otherwise it was well-organised.

My wife and I are planning to visit Saudi Arabia in November, and we fly out of Medina. We are non-Moslem, but are very conservative and very respectful of the Moslem religion. We would like to visit Medina.
Could you tell me what we are allowed to do in Medina? Can we stay in any hotel? I've read that we can't go inside the actual Prophet's Mosque, but can we go onto the courtyard?
Are you aware of any good and reliable city tours?
Thanks for any information you can provide me.

Can non-Muslims visit this museum? And what's the best visa-entry option for a single male traveler coming from another GCC country?
Written April 10, 2017
I know this question was asked several years ago however, I wanted to correct all the incorrect info given before. Any non Muslim is allowed into any mosque including Al Madina Almonawara if he/she is seeking knowledge or understanding or just out of pure curiosity as long as they are dressed decently and are not entering to do harm or dirty the place. The ONLY mosque which is not allowed for anyone other than Muslims to enter is the Holy mosque in Makkah.
I hope this information is helpful to you and for others as well.
