Redlands in Yunnan is still relatively hidden from tourists. While Yuanyuang boasts of its beautiful rice terraces, Redlands is breathtaking with its red, brown, yellow and green terraces. It's a great place for photographers although one must rely on the weather and different view points for outstanding shots. The journey from Kunming takes about 3 hours and the roads can... More

A fantastic opportunity for photos, especially if you stay overnight and get both late afternoon and also sunrise photos. A local will need to drive you around the various spots but it is definitely worth it. We paid ¥200 for all the driving and ¥70 for a room. We caught the 8.30 direct bus from Kunming North Bus station to... More

We went to Dongchuan with the suggestion of my photography friend. The area is very photogenic and with our guided tour, we were able to catch all the highlights we should have.

Getting to Dongchuan is not easy without a car of your own.During our trip, swathes of the roads there were under repair & some parts inaccessible.Be warned that fog is common in Dongchuan, even as late as 11 am or noon!We had to turn back & abandon our first attempt as we came up against thick fog.The original hotel that we'd book... This is a site to be seen and not missed. We had the misfortune of some fog so the higher elevations were fully socked in. We did, however, manage to get some breaks at lower elevations and got some great views and shots. We went with a knowledgeable guide and driver - which made a big difference.

also called: Dongchuan Red Land, Dōngchuān hóngtǔdì, 东川红土地), Dongchuan red soil. There are few different ways to tour the place. This one is simple. We did this trip in August 2016. The scenery is mostly green terraces with some red soil. It is nicer in the spring and fall seasons. We did not get to see the sunrise due to... More

It is definitely possible to visit dongchuan and comeback to kunming in the same day, despite what everyone says. The bus takes 3h each way, but be sure to catch the right one. IF you want to go and return in the same day, I recommend you to go by car for ~900¥, it's faster, you can return later and... More
