Located in the far north of the city, thhe e Botanical Gardens are more of a place for local families to while away a sunny afternoon than a must-see for tourists to Kunming. Take a book and a hammock and set yourself in the less-frequented West Garden. It's a nice break from the hustle and busetle of the city.

The park is located in the far north of the city, a taxi is the best way to get to the main north entrance, Kunming taxis are fairly inexpensive. Entrance is just 10 RMB, any time after mid March it is a riot of colours and smells, beautifully laid out exhibits, a nice glasshouse, lovely areas of woodland. A very nice place to spend an afternoon. The only down sides are the lack of sears and the fact it closes at 5:00 p.m. Getting a taxi back at the gate is reasonably easy and a number of buses mack to the city centre stop there.

What an enormous disappointment. Not a knowledgeable gardener or English speaker anywhere to be found, even on a busy weekend. Herbarium - closed! Begonia House - Closed! Tropical Greenhouse - Closed! Peculiar Plant House - closed! Cactus House - Closed! Monocot park - closed! Propogation labs - derelict! No English signs anywhere, even in the exhibition hall. Much of the gardens were completely unkempt and overgrown. The bamboo gardens had not been touched in years. This place just goes to show the disdain that the Chinese show for their natural environment. The bus route from downtown was lined with multi billion yuan cigarette factories, but this invaluable botanical resource is obviously seen as a comparative waste of space. Director, Guan Kaiyun should have been sack decades ago for letting the place get into this awful state. Considering that Kunming is possibly the worlds number one bio-diversity hot spot, I would have expected something on par with the Eden Project in the UK, or some of the permaculture farms in Queensland. This in comparison was a sad joke. Unimaginative row planting with no attention paid to landscape or watershed. Badly neglected specimens screaming out for a little TLC. If this is the best that China can do, then god help them in the coming post-industrial age.

This is a little gem of a place in Kunming, somewhat peaceful and cheap to enter. I went during the spring festival and saw a lovely selection of flowers in bloom, one that they are most famous for, and a wide selection of other local and imported plants. The garden is not very big so you would probably not need more that an hour or so, unless you are planning on spending time painting or photographing.

To get here, ride the blue line to the second to last stop and take a taxi or walk up the 7204 highway.

We visited the botanical garden when the Reticulata Camellia's were in full bloom. This is an extraordinary display of colours and forms. Don't miss the greenhouse with more than 30 different species of yellow Camellia's

Beautiful and quiet place with a lot of flowers and big grass fields where you may sit or even camp with your family.
Entrance is 10 yuan only.
Best time to visit is spring but not winter^^ because all exhibition halls are closed and not many flowers to catch a good shot.

This 44 hectare garden is 12 km away from Kunming town center. Located next to the Black Dragon Pool Park, this is one of the key horticultural gardens in Kunming. The themed gardens here are the camellia garden, azalea garden, greenhouse area and arbor trees area. There is also a tea plantation in the garden. Flowers should be at their best in spring and summer. It was still beautiful when we were there. Nice place for a walk.

This is a nice part of Kunming, very family oriented. People are out picnicking, enjoying the flowers, getting their wedding photos taken, family photos, and just about everybody. It's a great place to relax too. Some of the flowers like the magnolia trees and amaryllis are spectacular and abundant.

Late in November, it's the best time to enjoying the stunning view of the red maple tree avenue. It's not easy to see red maple trees cover almost half of the hill in Kunming such a sub-tropical area, comparing with northern part of China. There are also quite a porpular site to take wedding photoes for young guys. It's also a good place for family with kids to picnic during the weekends on its huge lawn.
