Felt surprise when realise an U can become a popular photo spot in Kunming city. But it is true. When the time we came, we saw many local and tourist taking photo at every corner side.
The building seem very vintage style. There is a big greeny field. There is also a Maidenhair Road as we can see yellow leaves along the pathway during fall season.

This is one of those spots in Kunming that the average foreign tourist looks at and says "ho-hum -- another college campus." Sure, it has a number of ordinary looking university buildings with students hanging out on benches, as you would expect. But . . . smack in the middle is the old imperial examination building where for centuries aspiring imperial bureaucrats toiled over exams that are legendarily claimed to have been the hardest exams in the world. Folklore at Oxford when I was there claimed that there were only 2 imperial exams -- #1 "Write down everything you know." #2 "Write down everything you don't know." That's a joke of course, but the imperial exams were extremely demanding. Beside the examination hall is the dormitory where the students lived when they took the exams. How many universities can boast of such an historic core? So, if you just breeze through and say, "nothing special," I can't help you.

Just a short walk from Cui Hu (Green Lake) is Yunnan University which was once a headquarters for the resistance against the Japanese in WWII. In addition to many beautiful historic buildings the University has a wonderful park area filled with trees and green spaces. If you are looking to escape from the street and take a peaceful break then stroll through this lovely campus.

Large campus with huge grounds, worth wandering around to see the gardens and meet students.
Best in early morning or late afternoon, when nice light.

My husband and I didn't plan on visiting here, we just decided to go in while on our way to a restaurant. It was nice, quiet and not crowded. It looked liked a old ghost university, Creepy, yet cool experience. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

I got a tour of the campus from a friend who is working for the government, and preparing write-ups on significant places and events which took place at them. It is a very nice campus and has a lot of stately buildings – some of which are of traditional Chinese design - as would be expected for a university with approximately 31,000 students and growing. The student mix is about 16,000 undergraduates, 15,000 postgraduates, and 100 doctoral students.
The Yunnan University of Kunming, founded in 1922, is one of the national key universities and has national and provincial key protection units. It started as a privately-run institution operating under the name “University of the Eastern Land.” The university has about 700-degree programs, and its student body includes about 1,000 from other countries.
The university’s motto is “Integrity, Excellence in Scholarly Attainments, and Greatness in Career Pursuits.”
For me, the visit was a nice walk from Green Lake Hotel. Both the Green Lake area and the campus grounds are beautiful, peaceful, and home to many very nice trees. The bottom metre of many of the trees is painted white with a solution to protect the trees from certain bugs.
