The views of the river and its houses on the sidewalks along a park are beautiful. The entrence and schedule of the ferry are difficult to find. Less crowded that at West Lake.

We did a short boat ride along the canal as part of a structured tour. We had a boat just for our tour group and found it very interesting. Lots of old buildings, bridges people doing their laundry in the water. We stopped and then...More

The boat ride at the grand canal was really awesome. We were seated on the upper deck, which was not open to the locals and it was great since we had it all to ourselves.... big thanks to our guide Jerry who made it happen.

The area around Gongchen Bridge is good for walking, dining, people-watching, . . . Considering the age of the canal, it's impressive to see it still being used for commerce. The adjacent museum is a must for grasping the scope of the endeavor. Hangzhou can...More

Group boat rides on tiny portion of Grand canal. interesting cultural spot, but aside from boat ride, not great. Village at far end had one nice cultural building with artists working and displaying and selling wares that were authentic, not cut trinket.

Took a cruise along this canal and it was really impressive. The canal is more than 2000 years old and is the longest and largest ancient canal in the world. The Hangzhou section itself is very interesting as along the canal are settlements and clusters...More

This is one of the great sites of Hangzhou, but hard to get information about! The Grand Canal is up there with the Great Wall as one of the major feats of ancient China, for me more interesting than the West Lake. Here's an itinerary.......More

It's very beautifull trip across the Grand Canal in the evening, when it's getting dark. It's also preferable the take a trip in a non raining weather - in this case the windows on the boat are clean and you can take good pictures. Almost...More

It makes a great walk up the canal from Wulin square to Gongchen bridge. Many things to see and explore left and right from the water. It is impressive to see how many heavy laden ships move up and down this historic canal. Especially when...More

Probably not. The paths next to the canal are pedestrian walkways. There may be sections where there are bike-friendly paths, but not where I was (around the Grand Canal Museum).
