I suggest hiking up and cable car down at Sunset . Beautiful / spooky bridge on the way up . Great photo op. Also Nonubiki waterfalls .a little past the waterfall and there is a little shop owned by a little old lady . stop in for a beer overlooking the waterfall, awesome, relaxing view . The owner is really nice and will bring you complimentary Japanese nibbles. Beers are about 300 yen . Highly recommended . continue up till you get to the damn . If you packed a picnic this is a great place to stop and have it . Continue up to the Botanical Gardens . Rose water Soda is really nice, also lavender icecream is interesting . Enjoy view of Kobe .The hike up will take anywhere from 40 min to an hour . i recommend cable car down the mountain at sunset. its gorgeous , one way down is 700 yen .

Only In Kobe short time for the Marathon with daily event commitments, so this was perfect sightseeing to fit into my busy short schedule. Just behind the main train station it’s so easy to get to and from. Wouldn’t think there is such beautiful treks & waterfall so central. Treks can go for a while or cut them short, what ever the fitness level or time allows.
Mindfulness Tea ceremony & tour treks available, Book early as we missed out trying to book 1-2 days advance but they were very helpful trying to fit us in.
Worth visiting to wonder free in nature and take in some fresh air 🍃

We started from the path below the train station up to the Nunobiki falls. Spent some time taking photo there then continued up to the reservoir. The trail is really clean, visible and even tho most of the signs are in japanese, we used the Google app translate to help with directions. We had a late start in the afternoon, wanted to go all the way to Mount Maya but were worried bout the darkness (sun sets at 540pm) and there was still 2km steep climb up to Mt Maya, not equipped with headlights so we decided to come back down the same way back to the falls & train station. It was still a tough enough 8k hike both ways.
Would love to go back to Kobe just to attempt this again ❤️

The trails behind Shin-Kobe are nice for a quick trip to the Nunobiki waterfall. After that, it all depends on having a good map, time, motivation and maybe some picnic ? There are literally several dozens of kilometers of trails that go up to nice places such as Futatabi Koen, Nabebuta with a great view over Kobe and Awaji, Maya with a spectacular view over the whole Osaka bay on clear days and on and on towards Rokko if you feel like it. If you intend to trek seriously over these mountains, there is a great app in iTunes called 山と高原地図. Not sure if it's available on iTunes outside of Japan but if you can decipher some Kanji, it will help you get located in what can otherwise very quickly become a maze of mountain trails ! Happy hiking, running !

There are many paths up the mountains behind Shin-Kobe station. The most popular goes to Nunobiki Waterfall and on to the reservoir. This is a great walk for those of reasonable fitness. Much of it is steps due to the steep terrain. If you have an appetite for more you can continue around the reservoir and on up towards Mount Rokko or to Shinrin Arboretum. The tourist info point at Shin-Kobe Station should have a map with trails, marked in English and Japanese. The trails are all signposted in Japanese, so the dual language map is worth the extra money if you're keen on hiking. The views of the city and port on a clear day are fabulous!

This is a nice walking trail, some of it in the city, some of it in more of a nature setting. You can intercept the trail from many places as it parallels the city at the base of the mountain, so you can do small parts of the trail (or long stretches). Interesting mixture of city views and nature views.
