The gift shop had very unique art offerings that I had not seen in the other temples visited. Most of the souvenirs are the plastic garbage, but the Ryoanji temple had beautiful calligraphy, art, and metalworked gifts. Some were very expensive, but there were many...More

Madame Josephine, you are an idiot. I, an American, went to the garden yesterday and enjoyed the garden save for loud Germans, French, and Japanese. This has nothing to do with nationality.

The highlight of this garden is the Zen dry garden, so to be able to gaze over it and enjoy its simplicity and serenity was completely spoiled on our visit by loud Americans discussing Grandma in Kansas. Why do people like this, with no idea...More

Ryoanji temple is known its zen style rock garden. It is located near Kinkakuji, Golden Pavilion. However, it is apparently not as popular or famous as Golden Pavill. That is blessing because you can enjoy relatively peaceful quiet moments watching and appreciating the rock garden,...More

Although it rained on us the visit is well worth your time. The gardens and history are truly impressive.

The rock garden itself is a little underwhelming, though still pretty, but the temple grounds are beautiful. I loved all the lily pads and walking around the water.

This fascinating temple impressed us with it's gorgeous lily pond and the tranquility of it's Zen garden with 15 rocks on fine swept pebbles where people can pause to contemplate and meditate. It is said that if you can see all 15 rocks at once...More

A relaxing and soothing temple to visit. Although it can get crowded, most people are quiet and respectful at the rock garden. Find a place to sit, relax and enjoy the rock garden. Then enjoy walking around the grounds and ponds.

Hot springs and historic temples characterize the
leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil
residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's
most gorgeous architectural gems, including the
majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene
artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the
bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji
