- Everywhere is on the list…Amsterdam, The Netherlands851 contributionsGreat to walk aroundThis area transports you back to a traditional Japan. A complete tourist trap, but clean and safe. Loads of souvenir shops, restaurants, and things to see. - Josie IinoCambridge, United Kingdom735 contributionsGo early in the morning! In the afternoon, I feel as though I am in Human Bubble Ball without the human bubble. In the early morning, it is an amazing walk. It is fantastic to admire the architecture; it is so distinct. I felt transported back in history, as though I was in an isekai about Early Modern Japan. It is also incredible to walk it when there are few others around. There were whole stretches where I was the only person! It felt like the neighbourhood was made just for me in those moments. I wandered around the streets for at least one hour; it was truly unlike anything I had seen before. Really special.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten December 10, 2023

A lot of souvenir and snack shops! Just wander around and enjoy the experience & food! The neighborhood has lots of traditional wooden houses and shops situated along crooked narrow alleys. - LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsVery Crowded during my VisitIt was a short walk from the City Bus Stop to the entrance of this attraction. It very crowded during my visit with bus loads of Japanese students on their school trips. Along the way to the temples are stores selling souvenirs and local snacks, coffee shops, small restaurants, etc. The walk was slow, the streets being very narrow and curvy, and with so many people. Took some pictures here and hurriedly went to the City Bus Stop to go back to mynhotel.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten April 27, 2024

We stopped at Starbucks for coffee at 8:30 in the morning. Then strolled the area snapping nearly people-free photos. (Word to the wise, if you want a place to sit at Starbucks, go early. It was packed) The area is a nice little walk back in time.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 8, 2024

Lots of shops, but we did not spend much time going into many of them. We only stopped for matcha tiramisu on the way to the temple. Saw the famous cherry tree before it fell.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2024

Change comes everywhere but it seems to have affected this area immensely. The influx of "trendy" places has given the streets a new look and feel. We were there on a "less" crowded day and happy to go slowly and look and find some treasures. thereʻs tsukemono and even a shop that makes by hand the figures for each year. We picked up a dragon and a tiger. Take some time to go down side streets and paths not taken.

These stoned-paved streets are lined with lovely wooden stores selling everything from delicious Kyoto specialties to fine souvenir goods. There are also numerous cafes and restaurants if we wanted a break with a bite to eat or something to drink.
Most of the largely wooden buildings are original and have been lovingly preserved.
There was a scenic route we took from the Kiyomizu-dera shrine which had us walking on Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka which are below Kiyomizudera. This was only a 10-minute walk and we loved the preservation of the older part of Kyoto

Sanneizaka is a captivating destination that rewards early risers with mesmerizing photo opportunities of serene, empty streets. Return later to experience the vibrant transformation as life fills the alleys with bustling activity, showcasing the perfect blend of tranquility and liveliness. A must-visit spot for capturing the essence of Kyoto's charm.

We planned to spend 3 hours there but we ended up spending 5 hours. There were so much to see and so many interesting things to learn. We love how the stores have samples of food items for you to taste before buying. We ended up with lots of shopping goodies. There were loads of interesting soft serve ice cream stalls but try the one which offers the blue salt vanilla with rice bubbles. That was amazing. We also recommend the pork buns and Yatsuhashi. You can spend a good half day there. Best part of Kyoto in our opinion.

This is typical like other Kyoto streets all over the city.
Instagram makes it a crowded place that is no longer typical except to take to a beautiful temple just as crowded.
Even restaurants are full from the opening.
Finally the only advantage is to be near the SANJUSANGEN-DO 15 minutes walk.

The narrow streets leading up to Kiyomizudera are an attraction in itself to some. There are so many different/same places selling traditional sweets, matcha, souvenirs, ice cream and so on. It is worth a look if you have the time to go into a few places.
We stopped in a sweet shop that had a cafe in the far back where we bought a matcha snack and cold drink which was welcome (and air conditioned) on a terribly hot day.
Curious that of all the things to see, many want to stop at the Starbucks in a historic house (kind of smells).
Overall: Take into as much or little as you want, but have some patience and try some traditional sweets.

Hi all, if I would like to walk down slope instead of up, so can anyone recommend whether I should start from sannenzaka or ninenzaka?
Written September 3, 2018
You can start from Ninenzaka (also known as 2 years slope) before heading to Sannenzaka (the 3 years slope, that you've just mentioned)
Written September 4, 2018
Is ninenzaka and sannenzaka the place that leads to Kiyomizu dera? I intend to reach Kiyomizudera at 7.30 am and leave at 9.30 am on a weekday. Is it better to walk the 2 streets before I visit Kiyomizu dera or after that? Thanks in advance.
Written June 1, 2018
Weekdays are better choice. Both roads would lead to Kiyomizu-dera. Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka are beautiful in the morning. I prefer to walk on the Ninenzaka steps though, the calm and quiet morning simply enticing and a great way to start the morning.
I suggest to start a short walk at 7:00am from Ninenzaka, you will pass by Sannenzaka on the way to Kiyomizu-dera. Once done, you can walk back to Ninenzaka, by then most shops have opened.

hello,
I have another questions, how long do you think I should spend in these two street?
Thank you very much, your advice would help my japanese trip this summer become more memorable.

Hello, I will be going to kyoto this summer and I am really confused between sannenzaka , ninnenzaka and higashiyama district (an old street that I saw many reccomendations on youtube channel about japan).
Is sannenzaka and ninnenzaka in higashiyama district? Or are they separated locations?
Thankyou very much.
Written May 2, 2018
Higashiyama is a district in eastern Kyoto that contains many historic temples and buildings. Sannenzaka and Ninnenzaka are two streets in particular that have been preserved specially for tourists. They are located near Kiyomizudera, in Higashiyama district.

How can I get here from Kyoto station using public transport? Or is it within walking distance? Thank you!
Written November 7, 2016
I recommend to combine Kiyomizu-dera, south Higashiyama (Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes), Gion, Pontocho, with Fushimi Inari and Sanjusangendo (the artistic highlight of Kyoto) if you have a full day, and with Sanjusangendo if you have a half day. From Kyoto station, take JR Nara Line to JR Inari to visit Fushimi Inari. Then, take Keihan Railway from its Fushimi Inari (not JR Inari) station to Shichijo(7th street) station and walk 5 min to Sanjusangengo. Then, take a taxi (@1,000 yen) to Kiyomizu-dera or the Keihan again to Kiyomizu-Gojo (5th street) station and walk @15 min to Kiyomizu-dera(temple). Walk Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes, see Yasaka Pagoda, Ishibe alley, visit Kodaiji temple and its nice garden, walk through the Yasaka Shrine, and head to Gion Hanamikoji and Gion Shirakawa River areas. If you have time, head to Heian Jingu Shrine. From Gion, you can take the Keihan Railway from Gion-Shijo(4th street) station, or subway Tozai (easy-west) Line from Sanjo-Keihan or Kyoto Shiyakusho Mae (City Hall Front) stations and transfer to subway Karasuma Line at Karasuma-Oike and go back to JR Kyoto station. For the merits of each train system in Kyoto for sightseeing, read the above article carefully.

If I would like to take bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, is there any 5 days JR pass I can purchase? I saw some 5 days JR pass but not sure if it allows me to take bullet train. Please advise. thank you!

Sorry, I cannot help you. We were for a very limited time in Japan and just bought shinkansen tickets at the train stations. We never had problem to get seats despite we always purchased "on the edge". The frequency and punctuality is excellent. For example we took the risk to travel directly from Hiroshima to Narita airport to get the returning flight to Canada on the same day and just giving a margin of couple of hours for unexpected events, and everything worked like a precision watch. You may think that shinkansen tickets are expensive but is truly value for money. Good luck in Japan
