Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

Elegant, tranquil scenery

After of the bamboo forest in Tenryu-ji Arashiyama ,
Need 300 yen tickets, but there is a cup of green tea and a dessert,
Very elegant scenery,
And overlooking the entire Arashiyama.

後走到天龍寺後方的竹林在嵐山,到了常寂光寺的門口,
需要300 日元的門票,但有一杯抹茶和一份甜點,
非常高雅的日式庭園,
而且可以俯瞰整個嵐山。

Jojakkoji Temple was located after the bamboo trail. Entrance fee was required but there were full fall colors within the temple garden on the slope during autumn period. Nice to have a view there during your visit in Arishiyama.

A wonderful temple at the non-touristy side of Arashiyama. It boosts an amazing view during autumn like no other. Not the biggest of temple and it very much goes up the hill.

It is layers and layers of red, yellow, orange, all on top of each other, just so many wonderful maple leaves in a small area that makes it quite stunning.

As you climb the temple, you will find that you get a nice view of Kyoto and the backdrop is this vibrant autumn colours.

There are some areas to sit where you get to marvel at the sight in your own zen state. For 500 yen, this is a steal and despite having quite number of people during autumn, you can still find your own inner peace here!

Quiet and peaceful, worth the entrance fee. The walk from small temple to small temple was extremely relaxing and interesting. Recommend this temple.

We started off on the bamboo pathway in Arashiyama and were very underwhelmed. It is overcrowded and just not that special. Wee made our way north and the crowds thinned, and then we followed a few people to Jo-Jakkoji, and were so glad that we did. Unlike many of the other temples, this once consists mostly of beautifully kept gardens and forest on a steep hillside, with only a few buildings here and there. The photos just don't capture the serenity, peacefulness, and beautify of this place. Every time I walked around a bend or turned my head, I was met with some new and beautiful sight. It is wilder and more natural looking than a typical Japanese garden, and closer to nature than the typical Japanese temple. Not many people here either.

This is our favorite temple in Arashiyama and possibly Kyoto. It is scenic, tranquil, and not overrun with tourists. We walked to this temple after seeing the touristy Bamboo Grove. We enjoyed seeing the bamboo growing in this temple much more.

Different sets of stairways lead to the upper levels of this temple. Each level presents its own surprises from a scenic pond with fish that leap out of the water, to bamboo shoots growing among tall bamboo growth, to the ringing of the temple bell by a temple caretaker at noon. Other surprises include a beautiful view over Arashiyama from the top of the hill, an old but beautiful pagoda near the top, stone sculptures scattered among the temple grounds, and a metal plaque commemorating the life of a monk with a large mouth.

We came to Jojakkoji after visiting the bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji and was so relieved that there were no big crowds when we were there. Note that we went there during Spring in the afternoon. I realise that the crowds can be quite formidable during autumn.

The lack of big crowds gave us the opportunity to wander around and really enjoy the atmosphere of the whole compound. Do walk up to the viewing platform at the top of the compound for a nice view of Kyoto spread below you.

We were there around noon. And there was no one. Just the three of us. Later, we met another couple and that was it.
Beautiful place, breathtaking view, wonderful nature, beautiful colors. Everything is wonderful.
Maybe not for the elderly because it is a bit steep, but worth it definitely see.
Hidden and neglected gem.
My favorite place on our entire trip to Japan.
Entrance is paid, but worth every Yen

Highly recommended to visit if you are in Kyoto

Probably this temple is not famous among foreign tourists and you don't need to visit except in the autumn leaf viewing season. Among Japanese people "hunting" for beautiful autumn leaves, Arashiyama is one of the most popular places of Japan and this temple is the best place of Arashiyama. Highly recommendable.
