Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

This is a beautiful arched bridge that symbolizes Arashiyama. It spans the Katsura River (Oi River) that separates Sagano and Arashiyama. It is said to have been built during the Jowa era, and the current bridge was completed in 1934. When Emperor Kameyama saw the moon above the bridge, he commented, "It looks like the moon crossing without a cloud," so it was named Togetsukyo Bridge. It is very crowded with inbound tourists and domestic visitors. The autumn leaves of Arashiyama behind it are very beautiful.

Togetsukyo Bridge is a picturesque delight! Despite the crowds, crossing the bridge offers a splendid view of the enchanting surroundings. The scenic beauty of the river and the surrounding mountains makes it a truly lovely experience. An iconic spot that captures the essence of Arashiyama's charm. Don't miss the opportunity to take in the view and create lasting memories on Togetsukyo Bridge during your visit to Kyoto.

I didn't go out of my way to see this bridge, but since I was so close, I left other temples such as Ogurayama, the temples of the Jusan Mairi, and Daikakuji Temple behind and went just to see this bridge. It is indeed one of the symbols of Kyoto. What was disappointing was that foreigners with bad tourist manners were walking around, crossing the bridge even when there was no crosswalk, going against the flow of people on the bridge, couples who were just clingy, eating while walking... there were no good people here. They have the money to come to Japan, but they are indifferent to the culture and customs of the country they are in... I realized again that "quality" cannot be bought with money. Even if they obey the law, I don't want people with poor manners to come here, because they could ruin the famous Togetsukyo Bridge...

The Togetsukyo Bridge is located in the Arashiyama district of Western Kyoto, around 15 minute walk from the Bamboo Forest. This wooden bridge was built during the Heian Period (794-1185) spans the Katsura River in front of Arashiyama Mountain, offering picturesque views. When coming from the Bamboo Forest, crossing the bridge to other side is the Arashiyama Monkey Park. Because of the poor rainy weather, we didn’t walk across the bridge.

One of the first things you see as you approach Arashiyama is the Katsura river. The Katsura River is a continuation of two other rivers, the Hozu river and the Oi river. The Togetsukyo bridge, also known as the Moon Crossing Bridge, crosses the river and is notable for its views of cherry blossoms and autumn colors on the slopes of Arashiyama.
The Togetsukyo takes its name from the romantic notions of Emperor Kameyama in the 14th century, who noted that throughout the night it seemed like the moon was making its way across the bridge. We did not stay for the moon, but the romantic notion of the Emperor stayed with our thoughts as we proceeded.

If you're in the area of Tenryuji Temple, then it's worth a stroll along the Katsura river and enjoy the view of this historic wooden bridge.

Other than heading to the monkey reserve, there is very little going for the bridge in winter. This is because the background is all grey and not like the pictures one might see in pictures online.

The Togetsukyo Bridge is located in the picturesque Arashiyama district of Western Kyoto. First built during the Heian Period (794-1185), “togetsukyo” literally means bridge to the moon. This beautiful bridge crosses the Katsura River, offering fantastic views of the natural scenery that surrounds it. One of Arashiyama’s most iconic landmark it connects the main part of Arashiyama to the Monkey Park. Can imagine how beautiful it is when the bridge is light up.
The bridge is wide enough for vehicles and cyclists to pass through and ppe are at both sides admiring the scenic views. There are even joggers at evening time of 5:30pm when we were there..
There are various shops near the bridge with souvenirs and local products on sale, we grabbed the T-short with Arishmaya imprint!. Ok to us even it looks a bit touristy.
To us it is definitely a peaceful and memorable walk across the romantic bridge. From here we made our way to the bamboo groves which is another 20mins away.

We visited Arashiyama in late October. It is not the best month to come as the Autumn fallen foliage has not arrived. A better month would be to come in early or middle of November. It is only when the whole mountain of Arashiyama is colored by Autumn fallen foliage that the presence of Togetsukyo Bridge is felt as it blends marvelously with the gorgeous and scenic backdrop and bring out the outstanding beauty of this place.
The wind was strong and cold as we sat on the wooden bench beside this bridge and observed how the rickshaw pullers market their service to the visitors. Opposite of the road where we sat was a bus stop where visitors arrived and departed in Kyoto city bus no. 28.
At the riverside, many couples attired in kimono suit were taking photographs at the bank of the Kasturagawa River. We strolled our way across this bridge enjoying the scenery of the mountain and the river and the breeze that lightly caressed our face. We took another half an hour to walk further down to visit the Bamboo Forest Grove, Tenryu-ji Temple and Ninnomiya Shrine.
I had visited quite a number of the famous bridges in many parts of the world. How do we compare this Togetsukyo Bridge to the rest of the bridges. It is definitely not a suspension bridge like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the Langkawi Sky Bridge in Malaysia. We also cannot compare her to the longest U-Bein teak bridge in Mandalay though Togetsukyo Bridge is a wooden bridge built with reinforced concrete.. We are unable to associate her with the nationalistic Nanking Bridge, the first bridge proudly built by the Chinese without the Russian help.
Her uniqueness is in her ability to stand alone to connect across the Kasturagawa River and her significance in her ability to blend perfectly well with her natural surrounding, the mountains of Arashiyama and the gorgeous Kasturagawa River.
I like standing on this bridge with mindfulness looking at the flow of the river and the greenery of Arashiyama mountain and at the many tourists attired in kimono suit busy taking photographs.

Is there anything interesting on either side of the bridge?
Written October 31, 2019
We enjoying the food on the side of the bridge. Lots of option and all look inviting. But only few of them got chairs to sit. Most tourist have their food standing. Nice experiences.

The trees are bare in winter.
It is not colorful like spring and autumn.
But there are many sightseeing spots such as temples, shrines, bamboo forest, and monkey parks around Arashiyama.
