Our shop is centrally located in downtown Kyoto. Our shop is located within a traditional japanese machiya, which is classic wooden house. You can experience “Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing”, which is one of Kyoto’s traditional craft techniques. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a piece of fabric, such as a handkerchief, cloth wrapper, T-shirt, you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time.

I found this place online before I got to Japan and booked some time here. They were very welcoming and the activity was fun and easy. I would highly recommend it - no artistic talent needed. They also have some wonderful items in their gift shop and I spent a few more yen in there. Thank goodness they accepted credit... More

Visited this place based on TripAdvisor reviews... And it was simply superb !! The staff & the senior sensei (owner ?) were extremely helpful as we all tried our hands at various dyeing objects (bag, t-shirt, tapestry) & designs (kyoto, nature, japanese icons).... Very nice experience - highly recommended if you want to take a break from the heat &... More

The 2 of us and our 11 year old chose to do the yuzen dying course. We loved it. Essentially, this is about using different fabric dyes and stencils and get beautiful designs on cloth. They have a huge number of stencils to choose from. Between the of us, we made a tote, a tapestry and a tshirt (picture attached).The... More

So glad we took the time to attend the chopstick making course. In 3 hours, we had completed a set of unique and personal chop sticks out a special and fragrant cedar wood. Highly recommend this experience. Wonderful handcrafts store, too.

Given that Christmas is just around the corner my son and I took the furoshiki wrapping workshop. We learnt 12 different ways to wrap things using squares of fabric - from boxes of different shapes and sizes to bottles of wine and how to make a range of bags to carry things. Our tutor demonstrated the techniques slowly and clearly... More

This workshop is located in a small cafe/house, not far away from Nijo Castle. They can speak english and they offer workshop in various items such as furushiki and dyeing. We tried the dyeing one and it was fun! Too bad they didn't sell the template we use for dyeing.

I was a little 'templed out' by the end of my trip and so organized a few of these activity workshops to give me a different insight into Japanese culture. Here I took the chopstick making course! I really enjoyed it and think that it would be the best one to appeal to both men and women. I had a... More

Having worked in gift shops for years my daughter and I opted for the Furoshiki wrapping workshop as an alternative to paper wrapping. We were the only two for the lesson and learned 12 different wrapping methods covering A4 boxes, wine bottles and making bags. It was an enjoyable hour at the workshop plus many hours spents at the shops... More

I should perhaps preface this review by stating that I'm the artistic sort, and I generally enjoy painting and drawing and that sort of thing. :) That said, I really enjoyed myself at Marumasu Nishimuraya! I made a booking online for the kyo-yuzen dyeing workshop (the website has an English version) and had a little personal lesson. There were other... More

I wanted to do something that is more interesting, so I found marumasu and decided to go for chopstick making class. I was the only one attending the class, so it was nice to have a 1-2-1 session with Hiro San. He was patient and explained the history and printing and steps of chopstick making to me. Totally enjoyed my... More
