Pontocho Alley is a narrow alley full of restaurants. It runs from Shijo-dori to Sanjo-dori, one block west from Kamogawa River. We were staying near Kyoto Station however it was an easy bus ride (#17, #205) to Shijo Kawaramachi bus stop & then a short...More

One of my favourite things in Kyoto. The place was so special and suggestive. It’s a narrow street with lanterns all over and very typical Japanese restaurants. Go there at night, it’s extraordinary!

Definitely an interesting place to visit but had a terrible experience trying to find a place that would actually allow drop-in customers.

Had a great Izakaya dining experience at the Pontocho. Great atmosphere in this narrow alleyway. Lovely to just walk through even if you don’t want to eat there.

Myself and my wife wandered into a tiny pub, which only could fit 10 people. We ended up making friends with half the bar and ended up back in a house party.

We got dropped off by taxi and strolled around for about an hour. Great old cobblestone street with atmosphere and plenty of bars and restaurants. Picked a sushi restaurant and were not disappointed. Fantastic food, sake and beer.

Narrow lane with so many restaurants and pubs, where the authentic Japanese food will be served. Lot of tourists but always nice to walk through during day and evening.

Lovely old part of town. Loads of restaurants to choose from. We came here on our trip in November. The area is very traditional with lovely narrow streets and lots of lovely buildings.

Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's
most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow
street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's
busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls,
Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life,
making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to
come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and
bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly
