Arrived ten minutes before it opened but there was already a long line of people. Worth the wait to capture some beautiful photos but it was difficult to sit and relax. Would love to go back when it's empty. Definitely the best place in Kyoto to view the autumn foliage.

One of the best places to view autumn foliage during mid November. Almost all of the trees were red/orange, simply beautiful. Highly recommended

We took the train here from Kyoto Station. There is a JR line station about a 20 minute walk from the temple. The crowds were massive here as this is one of the prime fall foliage view sites in Kyoto. There were easily 10,000-15,000 people here. We paid two entry fees - one to get into the garden (okay -... This temple is a must see and is a great spot to see Autumn leaves. The temple is surrounded by beautiful view and offers a perfect background for photos. It is located in southeast of Kyoto and only a two-minute ride from Kyoto Train Station, on the way to Nara. Do take a walk in the cozy, small streets in... More

Tofukuji is one of the majestic old Zen temples of Kyoto and very beautiful in the fall, when I visited. However, be warned that everyone is aware of how majestic and beautiful it looks in the fall and time your visit accordingly, if you don't want to step over too many selfie sticks. It was very easy to get to... More

Tofukuji is famous for its red leaves. So, I strongly recommend you to visit it in November. During the season of red leaves the temple opens its gate at 8:30. To my surprise, there was plenty of visitors as I arrived at that time. The course of visit is just one-way, and it is not allowed to take a picture... More

Since we are a bit early for Autumn Colors; we decided to try this temple to see if their maple trees have already turned into autumn colors - and we were not disappointed. Aside from Autumn Leaves; the temple also have bamboo garden which is very nice. View from the top is breathtaking.

Stunning garden when we visited today - autumn foliage just about at its peak. Sure would be good at any time of your year though. Attractive temple buildings too although perhaps not so different as to those in Higashiyama to warrant a special train ride.

I would take the train first to Fushimi-Inari and then walk to Tofuku-ji. While we walked back from here to Kyoto train station, its quite a long walk, not picturesque, and I don't recommend it. This large Zen temple complex has a number of sub-temples and a 2 beautiful garden areas. Each garden area has its own admission fee. We... More

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
