Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

    The Kyoto station is HUGE!
The Kyoto station is absolutely huge. Kind of crazy with all the people going in so many directions. Information booths are there to assist where you want to go. It’s also immaculate. There are no garbage receptacles but there isn’t any littering. Plenty of good shops offering food and wares. Information booths are there for assistance. Very kind and patient help! Interesting, there’s no graffiti either!

    Amazing but hectic.
Kyoto Station itself is chaotic; and intense; but with fabulous architecture. Escalators that literally travel upwards of 12 levels; and a view from the top, to bottom, which is amazing. Anyhow, even though the hotel was quite close by - it took us about 30 minutes to find it lol. Far too many underground corridors to easily get lost in.

Very kind and helpful staff here!
I felt overwhelmed when I got out of my Shinkansen Train here. It was too crowded and everybody seemed to be rushing. At the Information Desk, an old man, speaking perfect English explained to me about the Day Pass, cost of tickets, where to wait for my bus outside, etc. This attraction is not only good for train services, but also for bus services. Outside, in front of it are Bus Stops for visiting local attractions of Kyoto. There are shops, restaurants, ATM, ticket machines, etc. at this station.

    Impressive and well designed
What a fantastic building! It is designed for energy saving and wow is it huge! The high ascending escalators take you to a sky garden on each end and a walkway between the two at roof level. Best to do this at night . Lots of shops and eating places and it also doubles as a train station . Well worth visiting. Bit confusing trying to find a restaurant you want to go to so just give up on that and walk around until you find a place you want to eat at in case you will never find it again.

    What a building!
Possibly this is not the world's best train station functionally (as a train station), but it certainly may be the most spectacular. The architecture is amazing. It is worthwhile to take the escalators up to the very top, to get a good free view over Kyoto. Sometimes, at night, there are light shows using lights on the steps to create pictures. These are very impressive. It's worth checking if any are happening while you are visiting.

    Train Station Worth Checking Out
This train station has it all and is a highlight during our visit to Kyoto. We visited in 2018 at the suggestion of friends and were skeptical at first but were very impressive with the train station. There are lots of architectural features to it that make it interesting including the Happy Terrace with unobstructed views of the surrounding city, the Skyway which goes high above the station, the grand staircase, and the large openings to see whats around like the Kyoto Tower. Our favourite spot is the ramen street on the tenth floor which features award winning ramen from all over Japan. You do have to queue and prepay using vending machines at most (if not all) restaurants but it is worth the wait if you have time for lunch or dinner in the Kyoto Station area. There are also numerous shops and conveniences that you would expect for a large train station in Japan and it is relatively easy to navigate. If you are a stamp collector like my wife you can go to the information centre or ask a station attendant for information on where to get your stamp. We spent a couple of hours at the train station and would recommend getting here before your train departs to check it out or planning for a lunch or dinner here after your train arrives. When we stayed in Kyoto we found that the Kyoto Station was central to all the activities we wanted to do in Kyoto and offered us easy and frequent transit solutions to get to what we wanted to see.

However if you can find the waiting room it gives an intriguing glimpse into a side of Japanese society you see less of as you travel round by train. Here is where people come to keep warm, eat lunch or just while away an hour of two. Quite a pleasnat change.

We actually did not pay much attention to this particular station on our arrival as it was in the late afternoon and we were looking forward to finding our accommodations in Kyoto our latest city stop. We did not realized the immensity of this gateway as it is the main railway junction stop for all trains going to and fro from Kyoto. We were able to explore this station in more detail when we had to research on how to cash in our metro cards and inquiring about bus transportation to Osaka airport etc. It was not a pleasant stroll from one end to another and onto the next level as the offices we were looking for seemed such a long ways apart. However, this did permit us to stop and shop along the way and the second floor level was immense. We were able to then appreciate this modern architectural structure at a different height. They do have English services in specific information area and when they were not able to understand our request, they reverted to using I Pad translation. Employees were most efficient and polite. Perhaps this is only a travel hub but there are lot of restaurant and food services here along with major stores and conveniences. So if you did have transfer delays, at least it gives you time to explore the services offered.

Whenever I'm in Kyoto, I seem to end up at the station building for something other than travel. This stunning, modern building may be a major transportation hub for railway lines, a subway line and buses, but its 15 floors offer much more. For example, on my most recent stop here with a friend, we went to the extremely helpful Visitor's Information Center on the second floor. We left with myriad maps and brochures, all helping our five-day stay in Kyoto to be even better than expected. A big department store and a shopping mall often beckon.

And there are restaurants and cafes galore. We ate breakfast in the building twice before boarding a train for a day excursion and another to take us to other parts of Japan. A grocery and food shops sell items suitable for a meal or snacks.

Signage is generally good, but a station map helps. Even with both, we kept going around in circles, trying to find the 10th floor's Sky Way. That's a corridor with windows that runs the length of the station and looks. down 148 feet into the central hall. It also has a viewpoint for the adjacent Kyoto Tower.

There is always something to do in this station, even it is just to walk around and gawk at the amazing architecture.

The architecture, lights, features are off the map. First, it is a really large train station, with thousands of people coming and going from this transportation hub all times of the day and night. The facility contains a hotel, many restaurants and bars, even an entire department store in the fifteen story roof. Led panels entertain with patterns of lights at night. Hiroshi Hara designed a futurism style finished in 1997 with a lot of glass and views from the roof. Fortunately our hotel was nearby and we were able to spend hours wandering around, marveling at the beauty of this building and its many features.

Kyoto is an amazing city with plenty to do. November is a tricky time as it is starting to get cool and rainy. On a good day the fall colours are spectacular. Transport is easy to use and affordable. The shrines, and temples are busy and filled mainly my Japanese.
There is an opportunity to rent kimono’s at the local stores before entering the shrines.
The markets are a fun way to eat and browse

Restaurant reservations are a must at high end spots. People are helpful and very polite

The Kyoto station is gigantic and has all the trimmings of a central metro station. Finding gates etc is all straight forward enough. The core business however - the actual rail services, are quite frustrating. An IC (icoca) card is the closest to our oyster / tap and go type card and in retrospect is fairly easy to get on apple wallet (works on buses too!). However there are so many exceptions, lines that need another card or in the case of Nara a second ticket needed. Having visited New York, London and Paris in the last 10 years, I am shocked how far behind the Japanese rail system is compared to these many years ago in terms of ease of use. And there are further issues - like needing your child’s passport to purchase their IC card? The lack of English language translations also limits you.

It seems that inbound tourists are returning. When I got off at Kyoto Station on a holiday morning, all the platforms were crowded, especially the Sanin Line platform. The station building itself seems to have placed too much emphasis on design, with little regard for the users. The high roof over the platform is useless in an emergency, and it reminded me that the operator is lacking in consideration of the users.

The design of the building is impressive and beautiful, especially inside. It's also very big. Like any other big train stations in Japan, it's a huge shopping mall with department store many souvenir stores, restaurants and a hotel also

Kyoto Station is very efficient, well laid out, and incredibly clean. My husband and myself are in our 70's, we had no trouble navigating around the station and locating our Shinkansen Nozomi train to Tokyo. We were able to obtain snacks and beverages for our trip very easily. It is the pinnacle of how a well run train station should operate!
