I am reviewing only the spa, there is a ryokan nearby (japanese style hotel) but we did not go there. The pool features a very small rotenburo (open air spa), lost in the woods near Kyoto. Don't expect great service or a red carpet center, the spa is quite "basic" but it's got all that it needs to get you... More

We did the walk from Kibune to Kurama (lovely) and I ended with my first trip to an Onsen. It's 1000 yen for the outside Onsen and you get a ticket from a machine not the man sat in the booth right next to it! I'd brushed up on all the Onsen etiquette before (get naked, shower before you go... More

Pros: Location, view, not crowded Cons: 1 outdoor pool (for max 10-14 guests) and 1 indoor pool about the same size. No massage. Relaxation room with a TV, kids running around. Low quality all around. I have been to other Onsens that are 10 times better..but the view is really nice!

What a delight. The hot baths were relaxing. Interesting Onsen in beautiful location. The restaurant was really good, too. Sitting on cushions. Met some great people. Could have stayed a week!!

I came up in the evening on the tram- the tram ride alone is reason to come to Kurama. I was able to catch the free shuttle bus from the station and was at the onsen in no time. I opted for the outdoor bath (1000 yen and only purchased a small towel (200 yen) which was perfectly effective. I... More

You have the choice of the full meal deal - the indoor spa, with jacuzzi and sauna, etc. - or the much cheaper outdoor onsen hot spring for 40 percent of the price. Trust me here and go for the cheaper option. You'll need to find the onsen ticket machine, but the pass, plus tickets for towels (rental or purchase... More

If you have the time I'd suggest you make the train trip to Kurama Onsen. Set in amazing scenery surrounded by forest you'll be able to completely unwind. We were going to hike from here to Kibune but ended up stage in the Onsen until after nightfall and ran out of time. I can only imagine how good it would... More

Took a day off the tourist circuit at Kyoto and went try the world famous onsen. The small train finishing at Kurama and the walk from the station to the thermal water warned me I was in a special place. Machiyas were so nice even Japanese tourists took photos. At the reception, charming people welcomed and gave me kit and... More

This is a very nice onsen to go to. I got the 1,000yen ticket which is a good price, but you have only one bath to go to compared to what they offer for 2,500yen. Nonetheless, it is very relaxing and there were not many people. It is in the mountains so the air is incredibly fresh, especially during the... More
