We spent the day on a very nice hike from Kufune shrine and Kubune area, up to Mount Karuma and the shrine, and Karuma town. Finishing the day with a soak at the onsen was just perfect. The outdoor bath was in a very nice setting with a red Japanese maple and mountain views. The bath itself was not too... More

I caught a 50 minute train ride from Kyoto which took me north through some lovely green and mountainous countryside before arriving at Kurama. The resort provides a shuttle bus service to the Onsen but I would recommend the walk through the town to the Onsen to get you more in the mood for the relaxing experience. The buildings were... Our trip to the Onsen was a fantastic experience at the end of a full morning's trek up and over Mount Kurama from Kibune-guchi Station, visiting all the temples along the way. We stuck to the outside hotspring, and were treated to a beautifully relaxing afternoon soaking in the waters after a wet morning. Both my sons (aged 9 and... More

The view, the hot spring, the food just everything was so beautiful. Had a great time even if we didn't have the best weather. The staff was so nice and they spoke very good English. Kurama was also a very nice town just to walk through.

Their outdoor pool is amazing but a bit small. I'm glad that I when I was there, there were not many crowd. Enjoying the amazing view of the nature and the cold weather while in the hot pool was all I need to make this as one my favourite place and experience during my visit o Kyoto last two weeks.... It was a very nice experience and relaxing. The outdoor onsen is very nice situated in the forest and the view is just amazingly beautiful. However, I feel upset and worry because some of the customers brought in their handphone to snap photo. Even though there is, a signboard at the onsen's entrance had mentioned NOT ALLOWED TO SNAP PHOTO.... More

For those who want to experience an outdoor hot spa without staying in an expensive hotel this is an excellent opportunity. Located in the north-eastern corner of Kyoto, at the end of a small local electric train (Eizan) line (420 yen for a 30 min ride), this spa is part of an expensive traditional inn (ryokan), but it's open to... Kurama is a short train ride north from Kyoto, in a heavily wooded mountainous area. After scaling Mt Kurama, there was literally nothing better than relaxing in the onsen. Two packages are available, one including the indoor and outdoor spas plus a relaxation room, and one with just access to the outside spa, where you have to pay for towel... More

We read previous reviews and we decided to visit Kurama Onsen. We paid ¥1000 each to use the outdoor bath (rotenburo). We were disappointed. The value of the bath was over-rated. The bath was only about 6 x 4 metres, no towels were provided and no stools to sit on when drying one's hair! For ¥1000, you would also assume... More

The hot spring was pretty much what i had expected. Beautiful scenery, great staffs who can speak little English yet were very helpful and friendly, free shuttle bus and cozy hot spring. It is a less than an hour journey if you are from Shichijo station where you have to change lines. But after stepping into the hot spring, it... More
