The vast majority of the temple complex, including the five story pagoda, is free to see. And since it's only #15 on here, the crowds stay away. Go for it!

Beautiful Japanese rocky yard, nice Japanese garden and pond and temples. Easy to go first here and then walk to the Golden Pavilion.

It was totally covered when I arrived and will be until 2019 I think. You can see how its built on huge wooden stilts but you cant see its majestic outside construction on the mountainside. Disappoint after the hard climb through the tourist of Gion

Dress comfortable as walking is necessary to see everything on offer. I visited the temple as part of half day tour. Always great with English speaking tour guide and local knowledge/history chats.

majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene
artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the
bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji
