The trip is very organised , perhaps too organised. You are allowed to walk on one side of the island, on a wooden path and not distance yourself not even 2 m from group. So all the rest you have to leave for your imagination....

Also known as Gunkanjima or (‘battleship island’ – so named because of its ship-like silhouette), was seen in the 2012 James Bond movie Skyfall. It was originally a huge Coal mine with over 5000 people working on the 1000 metre by 500 metre piece of rock and was the most densely populated place on earth! It was abandoned in the... More

Could have been nice if we had been able to dock. The sea was very rough and the captain made the right choice. I had unfortunately bought the ticket online the day before. Wouldn't have bothered in this weather even try otherwise. Book only if weather is good.

Great service. Easy check-in but get there early. We did not buy special tickets so those who did got on the boat first. Perfect weather day so no issues with sea conditions or temperatures. Interesting history and sure glad they offered English audio or it just looked like old buildings. Nice to hear about places in Nagasaki harbor as we... More

Day we went was a little cool and overcast but almost made the setting more surreal. Ferry ride to island. We had an adorable older Japanese gentleman who took the 7 English speakers on our own tour group. He gave us hints on where to sit for views and photos on way back. Always nearby with little pieces of info... More

Good to book in advance. On this trip we are the only 2 non Japanese and thankful we are being notice. A very nice crew member who speaks good English approached us and gave us a personal tour with explanation in English. That was great. A BIG THANK YOU (took the 9am cruise on 26 Mar). Very detailed information shared.... More

We booked our trip to Hashima Island (aka Gunkanjima) online a month ago prior to our trip to Nagasaki. When I first read about the history of Hashima Island about couple years ago, I had found this place was like a mystery which led me decide to visit the island with friends. Gunkanjima was built after the WWII. That said,... More

Gunkanjima island offers a unique view of a crumbling urban setting and how nature takes over. A bustling mining settlement in the 60s, it is now a ghost town with trees growing from the buildings and vultures circling above the island. An eerie experience!

This island was build after the war for mining and was then abandoned. I did not actually go there but saw if from the ship sailing by. It is a no-man-land island and give a ghostly feeling looking at it.

The tour operator changed the tour time slightly to fit our cruise schedule in. This island is a must. It was so interesting. We had a guide who helped us immensely with translating. There wss an info movie on the boat out. We passed the mitsubishi buildings and also saw a cruise ship under construction on the way out. We... More
