We have biked the ATT at least a dozen times. Its mostly flat, with a hill or two near the mall in Durham. Most of the trail is lined with trees. A new trailhead in the Cary area has lots of parking, drinking water and restrooms. Nice for a short or long ride - you decide. Thanks you to the... More

This place is amazing. Since the first time we went to the present always is so nice to go and breath deep pure air even that is so close to the city. Gorgeous views. Well care road. Not enough bathrooms around (specially when it's cold) Enough space to run, bicycling, riding a horse, walk with you puppies and family.

Easy flat hiking trail that is mostly wooded and shaded. Two good parking areas with restrooms. We frequently walk or bike on the trail. It is well used on weekends, much quieter during the weekdays

Been bike riding this trail for over 10 years starting at the New Hill Trailhead and now riding all the way to Scott King Road in Durham, about 25 miles total. It has gotten pretty crowded through Chatham County on the weekends so riding early in the morning or late, late in the day are the best options. Weekdays, even... More

I took my bike out to ride the southern portion of the American Tobacco trail. Be ready for this one. It's an old rainroad right away so the grades are not steep but they are exceptionally long. It is gravel at Olive Chapel and as you get up towards Durham and Cary it is mixed one lane paved one lane... More

Very nice place to take a good walk or go on bikes. We tried from the White Oaks parking lot in Apex. Want to try from other points as well. It's wide enough for bicyclists to go freely without (most of) the walkers blocking the path. There are walls of tall trees both sides that make it very good for... More

A friend and I did the stretch from the White Oak Church road access to the New Hope Church road access. Plenty of walkers, runners and bike riders who were all very friendly

The American Tobacco Trail (ATT) is a 22.7-mile rails-to-trails running from downtown Durham to rural southern Wake County. Durham manages the portion in Durham County, the Town of Cary manages the Chatham County section, and Wake County Parks manages the Wake County section. The multi-use trail is open to walkers, runners, bicyclists, and equestrians (limited to the trail south of... More

Up north used to bumpy bike paths with roots. This is newer, smoother and flatter. In & out of woods. Nice tunnel/ bridge overpasses. Falls of the Neuse also a favorite.

There are a lot of people using the trail on Sunday afternoons so you may find Saturdays more enjoyable if your goal is to feel more at one with nature. But even on busy days the paths are wide enough for pedestrians, runners, and bicyclists. This is a nice alternative to the highway for bike riding since you don't have... More
