My mistake was to stay in the park, the best views are from the bridge so make sure your early and get in the middle.

People who get hot too easily, don't like crowds and couldn't care less about bats and/or nature. Unlike those folks you will remember this nature show for years to come. And it may inspire you to visit some of the more natural bat colonies, the...More

Visiting the famous Congress Avenue "Bat" Bridge, especially during Austin's annual Bat Festival, was at the same time amazing and mundane. The festival, during which the bridge is closed to traffic and packed with street vendors and pedestrians, is a blast. At the expected time...More

Amazing display of nature. Thousands of bats leave from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk in a swarm that lasts at least three minutes (they may keep coming for ten minutes--but the main/large group lasts at least three.) This phenomenon begins in the spring...More

I think everyone should take advantage of this free and fun event. We all stood at the bridge anticipating the bat movement and there were lots of laughs just waiting. Finally an unbelievable number of bats streamed out in the evening light. It was really...More

We had an awesome time seeing the bats this evening. They didn't start leaving the bridge until it was almost completely dark, so they were a bit hard to see. You'll want to be on the east side of the bridge and closer to the...More

It's a must do - but they don't come out til the sun sets so you may be waiting a while. You can see the bats from other locations as well.

What an amazing sight ! Pictures don't do this attraction any justice . I would highly recommend being on the water for the best view. The bats followed the tree line side of the river ,so opposite of the building s. If you're standing on...More

I would go to the bridge about a 1/2 hour before sunset (March to October, best in July & August), so that you can get a good spot. I was standing on the bridge about 1/3 of the way north of the south end of the bridge... More

I see that people have already said sunset, but it is also important that the time of year is a factor as well. For example, I went in September when the population is apparently much more dense since the bat pups are... More
