It is worthwhile, and free, to walk around the capital and grounds. the building is open later into evening, but tours end in afternoon sometime. The architecture is relatively normal for state capitals, but its size is impressive and some of the detail is nice. There is an interesting tiny agricultural museum hidden to one side. The grounds have nice monuments and layout.

Absolutely the worst visitor center I have yet had the misfortune to try to visit. Walking from the Texas state capitol,. I followed the signposted route for handicapped-friendly access only to be confronted by a steep set of steps leading to the entrance. Having struggled to the top, I found my way to the gift shop, which was small and dismal, with a tired selection of boring souvenirs. The gift shop at the Bullock Texas Museum is infinitely better - and with motivated staff. Before leaving I went to the 'Welcome Desk' which was occupied by a heavily overweight senior who made a show of removing his earbuds so that he could reluctantly listen to my simple question asking if was any exit route without steps. He answered "I have absolutely no idea." That said it all.

I stopped by the visitor center after taking a tour and then additionally walking more around at the Texas State Capitol building.
The visitor center has a lot of detailed history and information that if you’re into history you will find very interesting.
There are also nice bathrooms and a nice gift shop. Lastly there is an information center where you can get information on other things to see and do while here in Austin

I ended up checking out the Capitol Complex Visitor Center after my visit to the Texas State Capitol. There are some tourist brochures that you can grab, and also a fantastic gift shop. I actually overheard a couple in the gift shop state that they were from my same home city, so I ended up chatting with them. In addition, the guy at the information booth was very helpful, providing me information that led me to going to a war museum in Fredericksburg.

We came to the Capitol Building a few times during our recent stay in Austin. We didn't go inside, however we enjoyed the property immensely. The grass surrounding the building really allows you to appreciate the structure and architecture of the Capitol. We even walked past the Governor's Mansion a few different times without even knowing it! Beautiful place to stop off at while walking around and great photo opportunity.

firstly, this building is huge (3 stories!) and very detailed. the entire second level is a kid friendly museum dedicated to the general history of Austin and building of the Capital. The first level, along with an upscale gift store, is where you will find some of the friendliest, most helpful people in Austin! They can tell you anything you want to know, make recommendations and even help you organize transportation or bookings! All you have to do is tell them what you enjoy doing, and they'll plan out your holiday! I would without 100% recommend this stop as everyone's first in the city of Austin!

We got to Austin and decided to visit the capital building, and very glad we did. The tour is free and meets about every 30 min given by a tour guide. The lady who we got was wonderful, she knew allot of Texas history and was a great story teller. The capital building is a beautiful place and the gift shop was a good place to get some Texas souvenirs.

Arrived near closing time, but still able to see most of what was available. Nice staff and good displays and information. However, there was nothing that "wowed" so if you miss it, it's OK.

After a walk in the park around it the previous day I had some time to come back and take the tour of the Capitol. Very nice, lots of interesting things about the history of Texas and the building. Liked it a lot!

Phil, this JUST floated in to me a few minutes ago. When we went it was free and it was about 1:00 PM. However, being a new year, I would call them at (512) 305 8400 as a verification. Several places have had budget cutbacks and hour changes in January.
