The gas company's sponsorship was stamped all over the museum. It could not have been more of an ad for a gas company if it had actually been an ad for a gas company.

The Austin History Center is placed outside of the Tourist Circuit but if you want to venture out and walk over to Guadalupe from Congress - you will be most happy you made it there.

I had passed by the Austin History Center (which is housed in the old Austin Library which was built in the early 1930's by the CCC) frequently but this was my first visit inside. There were two exhibits being shown one on the development of Austin in maps, sketches and photos and the other on the period of Reconstruction (1865-1890).... More

There is so much to see that it would take more time than we had, everything is TEXAS, just wonderful. Also visited the I iMax for a film on D-Day.

Good background. Always good to hear about a charming city like Austin within a big state of Texas! Would recommend visitors to make this a stop along the way to the State of Texas History Museum

The Austin History Center is a great place to go if you have a specific question about times of yore in Austin. They have an extensive collection of photos, yearbooks, and neighborhood archives. The staff is also very helpful at directing you to the information you need.

I've used the AHC to pull old articles about events in Austin. They have a great archive of stuff. I'm not sure how well it works if you are "just browsing", but if you have a specific topic of Austin History you are interested in, it is a great place to visit!

I really enjoy spending weekend afternoons at the Austin History Center. I get lost in the microfilm, city directories, photos, etc. It's a wonderful place and we're very lucky to have such a place in Austin.
