Trip to visit son. Daughter was my travel-mate. She booked the tickets online. We went on our last day which was a Saturday. Spent about 75 minutes there because we had to get to the airport for the flight home. Museum has a wonderful collection and the staff is very nice. We parked on the street because the parking garage was filling up due to sporting event at Texas U.
Thank you for your review! I'm so happy to hear that your quick visit was a pleasant one. We look forward to seeing you again the next time you're in town! -Lindsey, VVS

The Ellsworth Kelly building is really worth a visit in itself.
This is a lovely museum with quite a range of art. We were able to be there to see the exhibition of Maya art called "Forces of Nature." But what we really liked was the outdoor sculpture and the Ellsworth Kelly building.
Thank you for your review! Glad you got to see the Kelly on such a sunny day, it really is the best. Please visit us again! -Aiden, Visitor Services

    Nice, manageable museum
This is a manageable size of museum. We focused on the special exhibitions and the American art; we have seen more than enough European and religious art. Be sure to visit the Ellsworth Kelly building on site. They also have a very nice gift shop. There is parking at the Brazos garage across the street.
Thanks for visiting us! And thank you for the review! Glad to hear you enjoyed your time here.

    Arty Austin
A pleasant surprise, this museum, special exhibit of Japanese artist, along with their permanent collection of contemporary, European, and American art was impressive. We had about two hours before closing and discovered Tuesdays are free. A great experience.
Glad you got to spend a good chunk of time here! Our next exhibit opens in early August, I hope we'll see you again!

This is a fairly large museum for a university museum. I didn’t love the collection and found it was necessary to backtrack to see everything but there were some hidden gems. The Ellsworth Kelly installation which is a separate building was interesting. If you are interested in Latin American Art this has the largest exhibit I’ve seen in the US.

Even though we are members, it had been several years since my wife and I visited the Blanton Museum of Art. Looking for a weekend getaway to Austin, one of the activities we had on our list was a visit to the Blanton. We wanted to see the special exhibit - The Avant-Garde Networks of Amauta: Argentina, Mexico, and Peru in the 1920s - as well as become reacquainted with the rest of the museum. We also visited the Ellsworth Kelly building, completed in 2018. This was a thoroughly enjoyable visit. The Blanton is an excellent art museum.

We went to the Blanton Museum of Art on Friday unfortunately, since we learned that entry to the museum on Thursday's is for FREE! Thankfully the $12 entry was well worth the pay. We very much enjoyed the Western, old Southern, Latin American art, European art, Renaissance and all the expositions in between. There is some substantial construction going on around the museum but it really didn't affect the experience in anyway.

We spent about 25 minutes here - long enough to briskly walk through all of the exhibit rooms. We’d planned on a couple of hours, but just couldn’t muster enough interest to stay. We’ve been to museums all over the world and were really surprised that this one (generally well reviewed online) wasn’t more extensive. They had a number of the major art movements covered, but the artists’ works that were displayed were further from the core of those movements than you would expect. A museum doesn’t have to showcase only the big names, but it feels odd to ignore them entirely. The result ends up feeling like an entire museum of pieces that fall under “if you liked (insert artist name) then try this.” Unfortunately, we’d recommend you skip this and find other ways to spend your time and money in Austin.

Thank you so much for this perspective, fortunately we have expanded our collection, and have opened our new grounds since your visit with us! The Blanton Museum of Art is home to over 21,000 works in our permanent collection, and home to Ellsworth Kelly's Austin. In addition with the opening of our new grounds, experiencing our collection is now not limited to the galleries, but all around the museum! Including our now iconic petals, murals by Carmen Herrera, and Kay Rosen, as well as the immersive Butler Sound Gallery! We hope that you consider visiting again soon and seeing how Austin's art museum is changing and growing for the better! - Kalia, Visitor Services Assistant

While there was a great deal of construction around the museum and several rooms within were closed to visitors, it’s worth a visit. We lucked out and got in free on a Thursday, but even if we paid the modest entry fee it would have been great value for money. A really good collection of contemporary, western and European art.

My daughter and I were in Austin for a ladies trip. We decided to check out the Museum as it was a rainy day, and really glad we did.
The displays were varied and extensive. They have Ancient greek and Roman art, European art (which wasn't the best display), some American art. I really enjoyed the modern and contemporary art area.

What a treasure! This museum was free on the day that we visited, and the helpful staff was full of interesting information. We only had a couple of hours to spend and found so many unique items and spaces to enjoy. Park in the Brazos Garage on UT's campus, walk along MLK and enter the museum on the opposite side. I particularly appreciated the consideration for guests with disabilities, including the convenient elevator and thoughtfully placed benches.

Beautiful modern and bright facility is a good venue for a modern art collection that really does a good job of highlighting Hispanic artists of the US, Mexico, and South America. There are some excellent colonial period religious art works from Mexico and the commentary for displayed art in this section is first class. I really appreciated the architectural art in the main core which is entitled Stacked Water. The smooth, textured blue panels really created a feeling of walking into a cool body of water.

Make sure to reserve your tickets online.

My wife and I have visited many art museums during our travels across the country but the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin, often referred to as the Blanton or the BMA, like the state, is as big as it gets. Located at 200 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, on the UT Austin campus, the museum was founded in 1963 and is one of the largest university art museums in the country with 189,340 square feet devoted to temporary exhibitions, permanent collection galleries, storage, administrative offices, classrooms, a print study room, an auditorium, shop and cafe. It holds a permanent collection of more than 21,000 works with significant pieces of modern and contemporary art, Latin American art, Old Master paintings and prints and drawings from the United States, Europe and Latin America. What's to see? A collection of Greek, Etruscan and Roman vases that date to the sixth century BC, novelist James Michener's collection of more than 300 20th century American paintings, 20th century paintings by Thomas Hart Benton, Alice Neel and Brice Marden, a collection of European paintings, sculpture and decorative arts before 1900 by Rubens, Parmigianino, Paolo Veronese, Claude Lorrain and Simon Vouet, Latin American paintings and drawings by Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo and Tarsila do Amaral and the C.R. Smith Collection of Western American Art that includes works by Oscar E. Berninghaus, Albert Bierstadt, Solon H. Borglum, Tom Lea, Peter Hurd and Thomas Moran.

Viewed the Terry Allen exhibit at Blanton which was great. Extensive other art - wished we planned to spend more time. Elsworth Kelly building is not to be missed. Guide told us it it best when sun is high in the sky. Paramount had the Terry Allen performance - very comfortable and well arranged for listening and seeing.
