South Congress lacks the polish of Congress north of the Colorado and some of the downtown shopping districts. What makes it is the collection of eclectic stores, cafes, restaurants and food truck. Here you will find a genuine country western wear store (Allens Boots), one of Austin's most storied rock and roll clubs (The Continental), funky accommodations (Hotel San Jose)... More

Was this area supposed to be weird? Because it wasn't for us. Perhaps because we've grown up in a city (Vancouver) that has had funky areas since the 60's. It was interesting, however. A very nice array of stores from antiques to books to souvenirs to clothing. All price ranges.

It does take a bit of walking but you can find some unusual shops here. Not quite as good as I had heard but worth a trip if you would like to do some shopping. A good used book store, an artisan shop with lots of imports. Amy's Ice Cream has great vanilla ice cream as well as dairy free... More

We spent the afternoon in the downtown SOCO area. Do yourself a favor and eat at Hopdoddy's burger joint, spring for the truffle fries and a vanilla milkshake, thank me later. Well worth the wait. The bats emerging from under the Ann Richards Congress Ave bridge is a must see. Make sure to look up what time the sun sets... More

There are Unique Boutique shops and antique shops along South Congress. There are several great restaurants as well. However, it may not be the best place for young children because people too frequently stop on the sidewalk and don't pay attention to others watching to continue pushing strollers. Also, it's quite Cutthroat trying to find a parking spot. Be sure... More

From Az visiting...nice unique shops and restaurants. I heard that this place has virtually transformed from over-night along with the demographics and the real-estate values! Very nice with a local hipster atmosphere.

Great selections of stores. Food trucks are delicious. Joe's coffee shop is a great place to hand out with your dog while drinking coffee.

Nice place to visit. Plenty of shops and restaurants to chose from. It does get crowded and parking is always a challenge. Price range from normal to fine dining.

Great way to spend an hour or two -- strolling on the street and watching people, ducking into shops. Great little coffee shop on a cold afternoon.
