Very old military post. Located right next to the National Cemetery. Feels very DC, with a view from far of some monuments. Lots of aircraft flying over, either military or civilian coming to/from DCA

If you are fortunate enough to be able to lodge at Fort Myer for leisure, take advantage of that privilege. It is the most beautiful base we have ever encountered in our travels. The lodging in Historic Building #50 is superb. Walking around the base is serene and breathtaking. Be sure to walk down the hill towards Wright Gate for a spectacular view of DC. There is a chapel for worship, a commissary, a small PX and a very large (3 floors) base exchange. A beautiful place to visit and you can enter Arlington Cemetery directly from the base.

Fort Meyer was established in 1887 and has been important in U.S. military history. Many of the original buildings are still standing, some repurposed, along with more modern buildings. The caisson platoon and old guard still function here due to its proximity to Arlington Cemetery.

Following a meeting we toured the CAISSON stables. A somber and wonderful tour. Our guide was dedicated to the mission, knowledgeable and funny. If you get on Fort Myer add this to your day.

We enjoyed our visit to Ft. Myer seeing the home of the Soldiers that provide overwatch and security to Arlington. Portions of Arlington National Cemetary can be seen from the base. We were able to access Arlington through the gates on the post but I do not think it is open regularly. Recommend checking the website or calling to confirm. We were there for a special occasion. Also, you will need to have access to the base to get on.

My brother is retired military so he took us to Fort Myer to look around. We enjoyed driving through the military quarters and viewing the charming architecture of the houses. You can feel a sense of history here. Henderson Hall is an extraordinary exchange facility. They have an abundance of designer name merchandise and great prices.

Fort Myer (which has now been combined bureaucratically with other nearby facilities) is a really cool historical and still functional Army base. Many of the buildings are from the late 1800s though the base has a history that goes back well before the Civil War. The Buffalo Soldiers were based here. This is the site of the word's first military aircraft flight - and it's first fatality. There used to be a museum but it might have closed. One cool thing to think about it looking for US Army Band concerts.

There is also a commissary, PX and gym on the facility amongst other services for those with proper ID.

Its so interesting to see the amount of work that goes into the ceremonies. Make sure to tour the stables and meet all of the horses.

The Old Post Chapel on Fort Myer, located near Arlington National Cemetery, is the site of many military funerals but is also used for weddings and a place of worship for the military community of Fort Myer. The chapel is appealing in its simplicity and its unique stained glassed windows add to its beauty. The windows were donated by the chaplain corps of the different branches of the services. I recently attend a full-honors military funeral from this chapel to Arlington National Cemetery. After the church service, the casket was placed on a caisson pulled by six horses. Behind the caisson, family and friends may choose to walk or drive their car to the burial site.

This fort is located in Arlington, VA and is the home of the Army guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. You must show identification to enter the fort. It is a well guarded fort since 911 and you must be respectful while visiting.
