Stopped by there a couple of times while in Pelhourinho. I'm told that the prices for cheap souvenirs are better there than in old town. Picked up some nice table clothes at one of the booths. There is a police presence but always felt safe there. It's a good idea to hold tight to your purse as you would in... More

I love everything in Bahia, I tried to go where the locals where and not too "Touristy". Bahiano's are just beautiful people with an amazing outlook in Life. So much Energy, culture and Passion! So glad to meet so many locals here. Tried the food - was incredible! Definitely need to visit Bahia!

If your after hand made crafts, clothes or jewellery etc, then this place is definitely worth a visit. Use the elevator lift from the upper level of the historical district to reach this as it is located at the bottom of the city, nearby to the port.

You can find all the handicrafts of Brazil under this roof... 2 floors of shops... Do not forget, you must deal the prices. Go around once, check the merchandise and then come back to do your shopping. Many stands have repeat merchandise, so be selective. Beware of imitations... and of ''handmade'' merchandise, that are actually machine and mass produced. Certainly... More

The typical covered market place offers no real special items but you can find here most everything you may be looking for. All types of sandals, music instruments, cachaça, linen, cook ware... Not too special since you can find same stuff at lower prices in the streets of the historical district.

Mercado Modelo can impress by size and appearance. Unfortunately the inside is dirty and poorly organized. Most of the inside shops are unattractive with products that you can find in any tourist shop . You can visit the 2 restaurants on the top floor which has a good view of the Bay. Visit only if you need a T-shirt...
