As we always hear, the beauty of the island and its many beaches (of which we visited just a part) is magnificent. We stayed in Açaratiba which I highly recommend. The other side of the island (Abraão) is much more "developed" to the point of becoming a tourist trap. We stayed at Recanto Do Sol, a bed and breakfast simple but in which you can feel Samara's (owner) finger in every little bit of it. Everything is comfortable, of good quality and taste. The breakfast is home made and varies everyday, From this B&B a nice less than 15 min walk takes you to Araçatibinha, one of the most beautiful and cozy beaches I have ever been. One can hire boats or join others for fixed tours to nearby lakes and beaches -- every one more espectacular than the last. Make sure you visit the Praia do Dentista, another jewel. Because of the island difficult logistic, everything is quite more expensive than in mainland. It is not a cheap trip, but it is worth every penny of it.

A beautiful beach very close to Rio de Janeiro, its about a 2 and a half hour drive. As you step off the short ferry ride you can see that it is still quite underdeveloped, as there are no cars, no banks and very little cellphone signal. Which was fantastic as all there is to do is relax, swim, tan, hike, sailing, snorkeling and eating delicious sea food.
There are beautiful beaches, natural pools, waterfalls, a lot of guest houses, restaurants, boutiques and spas, but no ATM's so make sure you bring cash, and good book and camera.

I never have been in a peace so wonderful and calm like in Ilha Grande, and everyone I take falls in love as well. You can go to the beach, waterfalls by quiet trails or by boat. Ilha grande has a lot of camps (the campings in Brazil have shared kitchen), hostel and hostel most is very simple so do not worry too much, I have already paid more expensive and cheaper for practically the same service. There are markets, restaurants and bars with various price options.
Ilha grande has amazing boat tours, you can buy on time and take your drink and your snack (but the boat stops at a restaurant too) and many mapped trails, some trail need like to 2 days, but close too vila do abraão there are many short trails too. At night you will see small parties with guitar playing in the streets, if you want to know about the events of the day because there is always a forró (Brazilian festivities) around the beaches (usually there is no ticket, just enjoy)
I have been many times and I have never seen violence or robbery on the Ilha, but if you are drinking do not take too much and do not go away from the busy parts because it’s an island so there are many empty parts mainly at night. I've seen lost tourists look like drunk, this is not a good idea if you need to walk or get a boat to go back to where you are staying. Another important tip for foreign tourists is to look for the written price of the attractions like restaurants, bars or boat tour (so they cannot change the amount and you will pay as a local) if they do not have the price visible, if possible ask in more than one place.
Arriving on the Ilha Grande from Rio de Janeiro is easy, go to Rodoviária Novo Rio in Rio Center (by Taxi, Uber or subway + VLT) buy a ticket to Conceição de Jacareí or Angra dos Reis (You can buy it online) on the bus say to the drive you are going to Ilha Grande that the driver is going stop in front of the place to buy the ticket for the fast boat (Boat every 30 minutes more or less and probably almost all of the bus is going down as well) and the boats leave across the street to Vila do Abraão. You can also take the bus to Mangaratiba and get the boat but they have only 1 per day, leaving at 08:00 h, the journey is also longer because the big boat is slower than the fast boat, but also cheaper.

Ilha Grande is a great place to relax and enjoy. angra Dos Reis is an awesome island - few hours from Rio De Janeiro.. good to spend the day... once arrived there is a boat commute from the city to the island where you can swim in the not deep clear water...
Snorkeling or scuba dive trips are offered there. It is completely a beauty... deserve the stop.

Ilha Grande is an incredible getaway. The trails, beaches, people, all amazing. It's my second time visiting, and will not be my last. An easy recommendation (and this is applicable to all of Brasil), when they say "Feeds 2" on their menus, know that these portions feed AT LEAST three people. We had a large group of 15, ordered 7 of those dishes, and didn't even touch 3 plates (an unfortunate waste of food, as we weren't able to take the leftovers back to our pousada). My suggestion, at least 3 days to see the best of Ilha Grande, and be aware of the nature surrounding you. Don't leave trash, do respect the animals. Additionally, this is not a "luxury" getaway, there are no cars on the island, and the lights sometimes will go out. Appreciate the beauty and take all the hiccups as part of the journey.

We were only here for 1 day but this park is awesome!
There are beaches, natural pools (which are freezing fyi), and a hard upward hike to see a cute waterfall. Walking to the waterfall takes around 1.5 hours and it is physically quite difficult, very steep at some points. But there are monkeys all along the route! Its so cool! Got some great pictures!

Going there from rio, took 2 hours and half to reach jacarei de concessao
After pay the park lot for 4 days then boat, arriving to island after 45 min
We took a pousada in the heights of the island to avoid noisy beach night
Olhos d'agua, really excellent, people very friendly, cafe da manha, excellent a small pool is there for you after the day and you can enjoy the view of the sea from your balcony
One thing to take care bring money with you sometimes the card will not work due to network connection.

got on a 5 hour boat tour from Angra, January 2014. The boat was very crowded (approx 150 people), but the staff was nice. The water was horrible, we did not even dare to jump in because of the white foam floating everywhere. Staff told us it's been like this for the past two months. I think it's related to the sewage spills from Rio. Search the web for "rio janeiro raw sewage spills 2013".
Lots of traffic going back to Rio. Worst day we spent during our vacation. Hopefully they'll manage to clean the area up, it's really a crime to pollute and area like that ... if you want to go, do call and make sure the water is fine (maybe in 2015 / 2016??)

My boyfriend and I did a boat tour round the full island. The boat stoped off at 5 different beaches, each more beautiful than the next....including the famous aventureiro beach with the bent palm tree. The place is beautiful and the tour organisers are fantastic. Highly recommend this to anyone staying in or around Rio. It's well worth the 2-3 hour trip down the coast and boat ride to the island.
