The fort is quite interesting but it can be visited only in a guided tour that cost money, comes at scheduled times (approximately once every hour) and it is only in Portuguese! Therefore is not suitable for those who do not speak this language. Try just to walk and view the fort and the pleasant park located just outside of... More

Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress is located on the promontory at the harbor entrance to Rio de Janeiro. It was built in the 16th centaury and is a classic medieval fortress. The area is still an active military instillation so one has to be vetted by the military guards before being allowed to enter. There is a very pleasant park... More

Great excursion for a sunny week end as we did. We left Rio to join Niteroi by taxi and before enjoying the Mac we wanted to visit this Military site that founded in 1612 is still in use. The visit allows to discover a part of the fortress build on the rock of the cliff , the chapel , the... More

I pass near to the fortress several times, but in a merchant vessel, entering or leaving the Guanabara Bay. The view is wonderful. Friends who have visited the fortress indicate the ride. I intend to visit him through the land soon.

The fort is very old , built by the Portuguese to guard the entrance of the bay of Guanabara. A soldier takes you through as a guide.

Lats time I visited the forte my wonderful mom was still among us and she loved the time we spent there! Great for history lovers and also nature lovers as it does give a different perspective of Rio de Janeiro. Make sur you visit the fort as well.

Interesting site. The fort is very old and a guard takes you through as a guide. Not much shade though so bring a hat! I took the Niteroi free tour bus that they had during the Olympics; the fort is one of the stops.

The fort is quite amazing but the tour is made in a guided tour and it is only in Portuguese so we couldn't understand . We tried to just walk and view the fort but we're not allowed so we left. Bit disappointed.

The views are amazing, the tour done by the army was excellent (only in Portuguese that a friend translated). The fort has unbelievable views of Rio. We went in the evening and the sunset was brilliant. This is not publicised enough, it cost 10 Reals and was amazing. The drive to the fort is spectacular and goes thru some fishing... More
